Chapter 11 - The Final Letter in the Journal

“Your father?” I asked, stepping closer to Luca in the dusty, freezing cabin. “But your father has been dead for twenty years.”

Luca stared at the leather-bound book in his trembling hands.

“He didn't write this recently,” Luca said, his voice thick with a confusing mix of awe and horror. “These entries are dated from the 1990s. This is my father’s personal ledger. His deepest secrets. The things he never told the family.”

“Why would the Shadow Man leave your dead father’s ledger on Elena’s porch?” Marcus asked, keeping his flashlight steady on the pages.

Luca flipped quickly to the back of the book. Tucked between the final pages was a sealed, white envelope.

Written on the front, in elegant, sweeping cursive, were two words:

For Luca.

It was Elena’s handwriting.

Luca’s breath hitched. He carefully broke the seal of the envelope and pulled out a folded letter.

The silence in the cabin was absolute as he read the words the mother of his child had left behind. I watched a single tear escape his dark eyes, cutting a clean line down his shadowed cheek.

He finished reading, slowly lowered the letter, and handed it to me.

“Read it,” he whispered.

I took the letter with shaking hands.

My dearest Luca,

If you are reading this, it means my prayers were answered. It means the Shadow Man kept his promise, and you have found our son.

You must know the truth about the man who watched over us. His name is Father Thomas. He is a priest from the parish your father used to attend in secret.

Four years ago, when Vanessa gave me the photograph making me believe you wanted me dead, I ran to the church to pray for guidance. Father Thomas found me weeping. He knew who I was. And he told me a secret your father had confessed to him decades ago.

I paused, looking up at Luca. He nodded for me to continue.

Your father knew the Bellini family was treacherous. He wrote in this ledger that Vanessa’s father had tried to assassinate him twice. Your father hid this ledger with the church, instructing Father Thomas to only reveal it to you if the Bellinis ever tried to infiltrate our family through marriage.

When I told Father Thomas about Vanessa, he gave me the ledger to bring to you. But Vanessa’s brother caught me leaving the church. I barely escaped with my life. I knew if I stayed in Chicago, they would kill me and the baby I was carrying.

So Father Thomas brought me here. He hid me in these mountains. He was the Shadow Man, Luca. He brought me food. He brought Leo his medicine. He was my guardian angel. But when my illness became terminal, I knew Dominic was closing in. I hid the ledger to protect the proof, and I gave Father Thomas the silver bracelet to wrap around Leo’s inhaler, praying you would recognize it if the worst happened.

Do not hate yourself, Luca. You were manipulated by monsters. But you are a good man. You gave me the greatest joy of my life—our son. Raise him in the light. Find a woman who will love you both as fiercely as you deserve. My heart is at peace, knowing he is finally in your arms.

Forever yours,

Elena.

I lowered the letter, tears streaming down my face.

Elena hadn't died thinking Luca hated her. She had died knowing exactly what had happened. She had sacrificed her last days in hiding to protect the ultimate proof that would destroy the Bellini family, all while relying on a humble priest to watch over them in the dark.

“Father Thomas,” Luca whispered, looking up at the ceiling of the old cabin. “He saved my son’s life. He kept them safe when I couldn't.”

“He’s the reason you have Leo,” I agreed softly, wiping my cheeks.

Luca reached out and took the letter from my hands. He folded it carefully and placed it in the breast pocket of his coat, right over his heart.

“Marcus,” Luca said, his voice ringing with a profound, unshakeable peace. “Take the ledger. Turn it over to the family lawyers. Let them use it to completely dissolve any remaining ties to the Bellini estates. I want every trace of them erased from our history.”

“Done, Boss,” Marcus nodded, taking the leather book.

Luca turned to me. He didn't look like a grieving man anymore. The heavy, invisible chains of guilt that he had worn since the night Elena left him were finally, permanently broken. She had absolved him. She had given him her blessing to move forward.

He reached out, his large, warm hands gently framing my face.

“Let’s go home, Claire,” he whispered, his thumb brushing away my tears. “For good this time.”
