Chapter 9 - The Custody Papers on the Desk

The Moretti estate was bathed in the warm, golden light of Sunday morning.

The nightmare was officially over.

I walked quietly down the grand hallway of the second floor, holding a tray with a glass of fresh orange juice and a plate of scrambled eggs. I knocked gently on the door of the guest suite.

“Come in,” Mara’s voice called out.

I pushed the door open. Mara was sitting by the large bay window, wrapped in a plush robe, looking out at the manicured gardens. The heavy exhaustion of the last two days was evident on her face, but her eyes were clear and bright.

“I brought you breakfast,” I smiled, setting the tray on the small table beside her.

“Thank you, Claire,” Mara said, returning the smile. She reached out and squeezed my hand. “You didn't have to do this. You're not the maid anymore. You saved my nephew’s life. You’re family now.”

My cheeks flushed. Since we returned from the warehouse yesterday morning, everything had changed. Luca had explicitly ordered the household staff that I was no longer to wear a uniform, and I was not to lift a finger for chores.

“I wanted to,” I said softly. “How are you feeling?”

“Better,” Mara admitted, taking a sip of the juice. “Knowing Elena didn't hate us... knowing she protected Leo until the very end. It hurts, but it’s a clean hurt. Not a toxic one.”

She looked down at her hands. “I just wish I had my own daughter back to share this with. My ex-husband won't even return my calls. He says eighteen months of sobriety isn't enough to prove I’m a fit mother.”

Before I could offer a comforting word, the heavy oak door of the suite pushed open.

Luca walked in.

He was wearing a soft gray sweater and dark jeans, looking entirely different from the terrifying mafia boss who had nearly choked Vanessa to death. He looked rested. He looked peaceful.

“Good morning,” Luca said, his deep voice filling the room.

“Good morning,” Mara replied.

Luca walked over to his sister and placed a thick manila envelope on the table next to her breakfast tray.

“What is this?” Mara asked, frowning.

“Open it,” Luca said simply.

Mara picked up the envelope and pulled out the crisp, legally bound documents inside. As her eyes scanned the first page, she gasped. Her hands began to shake violently, and tears immediately flooded her eyes.

“Luca,” she choked out, looking up at him in absolute disbelief. “How... how did you do this?”

I looked at the papers. Printed clearly at the top was a Judicial Decree of Primary Custody.

“I had my lawyers pay a visit to your ex-husband last night,” Luca explained, his voice gentle but carrying the undeniable authority of his name. “They reminded him of a few indiscretions he’s been hiding in his own financial records. He suddenly decided that a mother’s love is exactly what his daughter needs.”

Mara burst into tears, throwing her arms around her brother’s neck. “Thank you! Oh my god, thank you, Luca!”

Luca hugged her back tightly, kissing the top of her head. “She comes home tomorrow, Mara. Your room is ready for her.”

I wiped a stray tear from my own cheek, overwhelmed by the profound healing taking place in this house. The toxic grip Vanessa had held over the family was gone, replaced entirely by unconditional love and fierce loyalty.

“Claire,” Luca said, pulling back from his sister and turning to me. “Could you come with me to the nursery? I need your help with something.”

“Of course,” I said immediately.

I followed Luca down the hall to the massive room that had been hurriedly converted into a nursery the day before.

Inside, the room was warm and quiet. Little Leo was sitting on a plush rug in the center of the floor, playing with a set of wooden building blocks. He was wearing clean, soft pajamas, his dark hair washed and brushed. His breathing was perfectly steady.

When he saw us, his green eyes lit up.

“Daddy! Claire!” Leo cheered, abandoning the blocks and running toward us.

Luca caught him effortlessly, scooping the little boy up and tossing him gently into the air, making Leo giggle uncontrollably.

“Good morning, my brave boy,” Luca smiled, kissing his cheek.

I watched them, my heart swelling with an emotion I couldn't quite put into words. This massive, dangerous man was the most gentle, devoted father I had ever seen.

Luca set Leo down and handed him a new stuffed bear. “Go show your bear the blocks, Leo. I need to talk to Claire for a minute.”

Leo happily trotted back to his toys.

Luca turned to me. The playful fatherly demeanor faded slightly, replaced by a deep, intense sincerity that made my breath catch.

“Claire,” he said quietly, stepping closer. “When you stood in that freezing warehouse, surrounded by men with guns... you didn't run. You didn't hide. You fought for my son like he was your own.”

“He needed me,” I whispered, looking down at my hands.

“I need you,” Luca corrected softly.

I looked up, my eyes wide.

He reached into the pocket of his sweater and pulled out a small, dark blue velvet box.

My heart hammered against my ribs.

He didn't open it immediately. He held it in his palm, his dark eyes searching my face.

“I spent four years believing I was destined to be alone,” Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. “I surrounded myself with power and money because I thought it was the only way to protect my family. But you... a twenty-six-year-old woman with nothing but courage and a pure heart... you showed me what real protection looks like.”

He slowly opened the velvet box.

Inside didn't sit a ring.

It was a delicate, stunningly beautiful vintage necklace. The pendant was a single, flawless emerald surrounded by tiny diamonds.

“This belonged to my grandmother,” Luca explained. “She was the heart of the Moretti family. She held us together through wars, through grief, and through joy.”

He took the necklace out of the box and stepped intimately close to me. I could smell the bergamot and cedar of his cologne.

May you like

“You are not my maid, Claire,” Luca whispered, gently reaching around my neck to clasp the delicate chain. The cool metal rested perfectly against my collarbone. “You are the heart of this house now. And if you’ll let me... I want to spend the rest of my life proving to you that you belong here, by my side.”
