Chapter 20 - The Locker Behind the Wall

The beam of Noah’s spotlight illuminated the black muzzle of Marcus Vance’s weapon.

The air in the subterranean bunker grew impossibly thin.

Malik did not retreat an inch.

"You think killing us here is going to save your campaign, Marcus?" Malik asked, his voice deadpan, chillingly calm.

"You think three bodies in a freshly renovated public school will go unnoticed?"

Marcus took a step forward, his polished shoes crunching over the dried plaster dust.

"You broke in here illegally," Marcus replied smoothly.

"A tragic gas leak in the decommissioned boiler room."

"A tragic explosion caused by amateur trespassers tampering with the old shutoff valves."

"The community will mourn you, Malik."

"They will name the whole damn building after you."

"And my record as District Attorney will remain spotless."

Noah suddenly shifted slightly behind Malik’s shoulder.

In his left hand, hidden behind his leg, Noah was holding his smartphone.

The red recording indicator was glowing brightly against his palm.

The audio and video were transmitting live directly to the state police cloud server through the school's emergency bandwidth network.

Marcus caught the reflection of the screen against the damp concrete wall.

His eyes narrowed violently.

"Drop the phone, boy," Marcus snarled, his finger tightening against the trigger.

"Noah, don't move," Malik commanded.

Then, from deep within the ventilation shaft directly above Marcus's head, there came a sudden, violent screech of tearing sheet metal.

A shower of rusted screws and dried insulation rained down onto Marcus's shoulders.

Marcus instinctively flinched, his firearm drifting upward toward the ceiling for a split fraction of a second.

Malik lunged forward with devastating speed.

He slammed his full weight into Marcus, driving the older man hard against the damp brick partition.

The gun discharged with an ear-splitting crack, the bullet ricocheting off the iron furnace platform.

Noah tackled Marcus's arm, sending the weapon clattering into the dark, murky sump drain beneath the floorboards.

Marcus gasped for air, pinned under Malik’s formidable grip.

"It's over, Marcus," Malik whispered fiercely into his ear.

"The whole world is watching."

At that very second, the heavy steel door at the top of the stairs was violently kicked open.

Multiple beams of high-powered tactical flashlights cut through the lingering gunsmoke.

"Police! Nobody move!" a voice roared from the landing.

State troopers poured down the steel steps, weapons drawn, shouting commands that bounced deafeningly off the damp walls.

Marcus Vance ceased struggling, lying limp on the cold dust, laughing softly and bitterly.

"You think this is over, Carter?" Marcus muttered through bloodied lips.

"Look behind the partition."

"Look into the second locker."

The troopers pulled Malik and Noah back, securing Marcus in handcuffs.

One of the lead investigators turned his tactical light toward the far wall, where Malik’s struggle with Marcus had shattered an old wooden drywall partition.

Behind the cracked wood stood an ancient, sealed corridor of rusted student lockers that had been hidden since 1999.

The door of locker number 104 was slightly ajar.

Inside rested a faded, yellow waterproof folder.

And scrawled in bold, fresh red paint across the metal face of the locker door was a message written not twenty-five years ago, but clearly within the last twenty-four hours:

*Julian was not the only one buried beneath Oakridge.*

*Check the foundation beneath Noah's classroom.*

Malik and I locked eyes in the harsh glare of the police lights.

Noah turned pale as the realization hit us with catastrophic force.

The nightmare was not ending.

It was only beginning.
