Chapter 15 - The Fragile Confession

It was past midnight, but sleep was an impossible luxury.
We knew Mrs. Baxter was still awake.
Earlier that evening, she had told us she lived in the assisted living cottage three blocks from the municipal park.
She had seemed frail, broken by time and regret.
We drove across town under the cover of darkness.
Malik carried the green metal box under his arm.
The porch light of cottage number four was still on.
When Malik knocked, the lace curtains parted.
Evelyn Baxter’s pale, wrinkled face appeared behind the glass.
She recognized us immediately.
When she opened the door, her eyes traveled directly down to the green box in Malik's hands.
She let out a soft, shuddering breath.
"You found it," she whispered.
Her knees seemed to buckle, and Noah moved quickly to support her elbow.
She led us into her small sitting room, which was lined with dusty books and framed photographs of former students.
She sat in a winged armchair and folded her frail hands in her lap.
"I hid that box behind the classroom wall the night I was fired," she said.
"I knew if I kept it in my house, Arthur Vance would burn it."
"Why didn't you go to the police, Mrs. Baxter?" Malik asked, his voice steady but laced with profound heartbreak.
"Because the police chief was Arthur Vance's brother-in-law," she wept.
Tears tracked down the deep valleys of her cheeks.
"I was a coward, Malik."
"Every single day of my life since November 14, 1999, I have woken up knowing I was a coward."
"Arthur told me Julian had been placed on a private train to a boarding school out west."
"He promised me Julian was safe."
"He said he only needed to hide the boy’s family shame."
"Did you believe him?" I asked sharply.
Mrs. Baxter looked at me, her aged eyes filled with genuine torment.
"I wanted to believe him because believing him allowed me to survive."
"But five years ago, before Arthur died in that hospital bed, he whispered something to me."
Malik leaned forward.
"What did he say?"
May you like
"He told me Julian never left the grounds of Oakridge High."
"He said Julian was sealed beneath the foundation of the old boiler room."
