Chapter 5

The close-up held on Damian’s face. His cold, observant eyes lingered on Grace’s frightened face for a brief, heartbreaking moment. He absorbed the sheer trauma radiating from his daughter, the innocent child who had been forced to carry the crushing weight of a terrifying secret, manipulated by the very woman who was supposed to become her mother. The rigid lines of his angular face softened by a fraction of a millimeter toward the girl, a silent promise of absolute, uncompromising protection.

Then, his eyes slowly shifted.

His head followed slightly as his gaze moved across the gold-rimmed porcelain and crystal stemware, locking directly onto Viviana. His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, the muscles flexing beneath his extremely short stubble. His lips became perfectly still.

He held her gaze in complete, terrifying silence.

The visual standoff suspended the room in this agonizing, freezing silence. The bright, luminous colors of the dining hall felt like a harsh interrogation spotlight, offering Viviana absolutely no place to hide.

"Are you calling my blood a liar in front of the entire commission?" Damian finally asked, the volume of his voice dropping into a register of pure, concentrated ice.

Viviana’s fair, rosy skin drained entirely of color. Her eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated panic. She looked wildly around the table, desperately seeking a single ally among the dozens of powerful syndicate members, but the faces staring back at her were stony and unforgiving.

"Damian, she is lying!" Viviana shrieked, her voice pitching up into a hysterical, defensive frequency. She pointed a shaking, diamond-clad finger at the little girl. "She is a manipulative, spoiled brat! The maid put her up to this! They conspired to ruin this dinner to make me look like a monster in front of your friends!"

"Is it customary for a child to invent the specific mechanics of blackmail to slander her father's fiancée?" Damian inquired. His deep, low voice rolled through the quiet room, the measured pauses striking like the heavy toll of a funeral bell.

"She is confused!" Viviana cried, tears of panic and frustration finally spilling over her fair cheeks, ruining her pristine makeup. "I never laid a hand on that servant! I swear it! I love Grace! I was going to be her mother!"

"Does love require a woman to orchestrate a psychological execution and terrorize an innocent child?" Damian asked, his cold, perceptive eyes dissecting her false narrative with surgical precision.

"You can't believe them!" Viviana insisted, her chest heaving beneath the sculpted satin of her evening gown. "They want me out of this house! The maid is jealous of my position!"

"Do you believe my daughter is a puppet, manipulated by a woman whose only crime is showing her the maternal warmth you inherently lack?" Damian asked smoothly.

He didn't wait for her pathetic, scrambling answer. He took a slow, deliberate step toward the center of the table. The refined artistic tattoos on his hands flexed as he rested his palms on the polished walnut wood.

"Did you truly believe you could brutalize my staff, terrorize my heir, and seamlessly ascend to my side without consequence?" Damian questioned.

Viviana opened her mouth, her breath catching audibly in the quiet room. She looked at the towering, deeply masculine Mafia boss, realizing that the formidable intellect she had so arrogantly underestimated had just trapped her perfectly.
