Chapter 1

The engagement dinner was a spectacle of absolute, uncompromising perfection, bathed entirely in a bright, airy, luminous warmth. Inside the sprawling Hollis mansion, cascading crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the vaulted ceiling, their myriad prisms casting a soft, elegant golden light across the grand dining hall. The illumination was flawless, rendering the room in clean, clear colors without a single dark shadow or muddy tint. The warm light played across intricately carved ivory-paneled walls and gilded ceiling moldings, reflecting off the grand, ornate marble fireplace that anchored the far end of the room. Tall ivory candles burned steadily inside heavy silver candelabras, their flickering flames dancing among sprawling, low arrangements of pristine white roses.
At the center of this radiant atmosphere stood the long, polished walnut dining table, surrounded by plush champagne velvet chairs. The table was a landscape of opulent wealth, covered in gold-rimmed porcelain plates, sparkling crystal stemware, and meticulously polished silver cutlery. Dozens of guests, all possessing fair, rosy skin and speaking in crisp, melodic American accents, filled the room with a sophisticated hum of conversation. Yet, despite the bright, fresh, and polished environment, an invisible, suffocating tension radiated from the head of the table.
Standing beside his chair was Damian Hollis. At forty-four, the Mafia boss possessed a movie-star-handsome masculinity that commanded the absolute submission of everyone in his presence. His powerful, broad shoulders effortlessly stretched the dark fabric of his tailored three-piece suit. He had an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell casually over his forehead, creating a deceptive softness. His cold, observant eyes missed nothing. Refined artistic tattoos stretched across his hands and fingers, utilizing generous negative space to maintain an elegant restraint, matching a small, intricate neck tattoo visible just above his crisp white collar. A heavy family signet ring gleamed on his hand alongside a luxury wristwatch.
"The vintage is absolutely exceptional tonight, Damian," a senior capo remarked, his American accent ringing out over the clinking of crystal glasses. "You spare no expense for your beautiful bride."
Damian slowly turned his signet ring, his cold gaze shifting from the crowded dining tables to his associate. His voice, when he spoke, was deep, quiet, and possessed a terrifying gravity.
"Is there any reason to celebrate an engagement with mediocrity, Thomas?"
His dialogue consisted exclusively of questions, a long-standing, chilling habit that unnerved even his most hardened lieutenants. It forced the listener into a constant, anxious state of defense.
"Of course not, sir," Thomas chuckled nervously, his rosy cheeks flushing deeper. "It is a flawless evening."
Standing opposite Damian was Viviana Sloane. At thirty-two, his fiancée was the picture of aristocratic privilege. She wore a sculpted satin evening gown that clung flawlessly to her slender figure. Diamond earrings sparkled brilliantly against her jawline, perfectly matching the massive engagement ring on her left hand. She offered a courteous, practiced smile to the guests, projecting an aura of complete, unbothered calm.
"Damian is a perfectionist," Viviana laughed smoothly, her voice light and persuasive. "It is what makes him such a formidable leader. We wanted tonight to be a seamless reflection of our new life together. Everything must be absolutely perfect."

"Does a perfect surface guarantee an uncorrupted foundation, Viviana?" Damian inquired, his gaze shifting toward her for a fraction of a second before moving toward the swinging service doors.
Moving seamlessly through the bright, airy room was Lara Bennett. At twenty-seven, the housemaid was exceptionally beautiful, possessing a softly oval face, expressive brows, and rounded cheekbones. Her fair, rosy skin was pale tonight, reflecting a deep, internalized dread. Her hair was braided loosely and pinned neatly at her nape. She wore a sophisticated black maid dress featuring a cinched waist, a slim fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. A neatly tied white apron, paired with a crisp white collar and cuffs, completed her polished appearance. However, hidden just beneath the edge of one white cuff was a faint, fading bruise—a violent secret she had endured in absolute silence to protect the most vulnerable member of the household.
