Chapter 16 - THE SISTER WHO VANISHED

The sub-basement beneath Sterling House was carved out of solid Manhattan bedrock, pre-dating the modern house by half a century.
The air down there smelled of cold dust, ancient paper, and machine oil.
Christian led the way holding an industrial flashlight, Julian following close behind with an encrypted tablet.
At the end of a narrow corridor lined with rough-hewn stone stood a heavy steel vault door with no external electronic components.
It was purely mechanical, operated by three heavy wheels and a biometric eye-piece installed during Leopold's final years.
Christian stepped up to the eyepiece.
A red beam scanned his iris, a heavy internal relay clicked, and Christian hauled the center wheel counter-clockwise.
With a deep groan of ungreased steel, the door swung open into the dark chamber.
Inside were rows of steel shelving containing hundreds of blue leather-bound binders—the true, unvarnished corporate record of the Sterling family.
Julian walked straight to the 1982 ledger section, pulling down a dusty volume marked *Partition Agreements and Dispersals*.
He blew the dust from the top and opened it across a metal table.
"Look here," Julian pointed to a faded page signed in black ink.
"This is the original partnership agreement between Leopold and Arthur."
Christian leaned over the ledger, his flashlight beam illuminating the yellowed parchment.
"Arthur’s signature was witnessed by a French notary," Christian noted.
"Look at the clause on page twelve," Julian said, his finger tracking down the lines.
"*In the event of voluntary dissolution under conditions of non-disclosure, the party accepting offshore indemnity surrenders all subsequent testamentary rights under the common law of the United States.*"
Christian read it twice, his pulse quickening.
"Arthur didn't just take five million francs," Christian realized.
"He signed an explicit surrender of all future claims against the American estate."
"He signed it under his real name," Julian added, turning the page.
"And there is an appendix."
Attached to the back of the ledger was a sealed photographic negative and an original receipt from a private bank in Zurich.
The receipt documented the wire transfer of the five million francs directly into an account owned by Arthur Sterling-Vane.
"Arthur committed perjury the moment he filed that petition in Geneva," Christian said, a grim satisfaction rising in his voice.
"He swore under oath that Leopold forced him out without consideration."
"This receipt proves he took the buyout and surrendered his title willingly."
Suddenly, Julian’s tablet chimed with an encrypted alert from Owen above.
Christian tapped the speakerphone icon.
"Owen, what is it?"
"Christian, Elena Rousseau just arrived at the White Plains detention facility," Owen’s voice crackled through the subterranean interference.
"She used her diplomatic status to bypass regular visitor screening."
"She is sitting across from Clara right now."
"Our listening tap inside the visiting booth just picked up the first sentence."
"What did she say?" Christian asked, his voice dead flat.
"Elena told Clara: *The boy is in the archive. Execute the second stage.*"
Christian’s eyes locked onto Julian.
"What second stage?" Christian demanded through the radio.
Owen’s voice went static, then came back with terrifying urgency:
"Christian, get out of the sub-basement now!"

"They didn't just leave a transmitter behind the stairs!"
"They tripped the environmental ventilation dampers on the lower levels!"
