Chapter 15 - THE GHOST IN THE ARCHIVES

By ten in the morning, Sterling House had been turned into a forensic zone.
Owen Vance had brought in four technical sweep specialists who scanned every square inch of the main gallery with spectrum analyzers.
Christian stood in the middle of the room, looking up at the portrait of Leopold Sterling hanging above the mantelpiece.
His father’s painted eyes seemed to follow him with cold, calculating detachment.
"He knew," Christian murmured to himself.
"He spent thirty years pretending he was the sole master, knowing the foundation was split."
Julian was on the floor near the base of the grand staircase, running a small thermal imaging sensor along the wainscoting.
"Father," Julian called out, not lifting his head.
Christian walked over and crouched beside the boy.
On the screen of the thermal sensor, a faint signature of heat—barely two degrees warmer than the surrounding woodwork—showed up behind the third riser of the stairs.
"A lithium battery," Owen confirmed, stepping up with a set of precision screwdrivers.
Owen carefully loosened the brass screws securing the carpet runner and lifted the wooden panel.
Tucked into the hollow mortise was a miniature relay transmitter connected to a high-capacity backup cell.
It had been drawing power directly from the low-voltage step lights along the staircase.
"It’s not just a microphone," Owen said, using tweezers to pull the module forward.
"It’s an active frequency bridge."
"It’s been broadcasting our internal room audio to a remote server since the day Clara moved in."
Christian felt a cold rage settle into his bones.
"Every conversation I had with my bankers," Christian said.
"Every strategy session regarding the trust."
"Every discussion about Victoria’s legal protection."
"They heard it all," Julian said, his eyes scanning the transmitter's serial numbers.
"That’s why Arthur knew exactly when to strike."
"He didn't wait four years by accident."
"He waited until you completed the consolidation of the European holdings last month."
"He let you do all the legal work to clean up the assets, so he could claim the purified entity."
Christian stood up, taking a long, steady breath.
"Owen, disconnect it."
"Wait," Julian commanded, his hand reaching out to touch Owen’s wrist.
Owen stopped instantly, looking at the twelve-year-old boy.
"If we cut the signal, Arthur knows we found it," Julian explained, looking up at Christian.
"If Arthur knows we found it, he accelerates the court filing before noon."
"What do you propose?" Christian asked, realizing the brilliance of his son’s tactical mind.
"We feed it a loop," Julian said.
"We let the bridge continue broadcasting ambient noise from yesterday."
"Meanwhile, we go to the only place Arthur cannot listen to."
"Where?" Christian asked.
Julian pointed straight down through the wooden floor.
"The sub-basement archive Leopold sealed in 1989."

"The one that requires the retinal match and the manual mechanical deadbolt."
"The one Clara could never reach."
