Chapter 5: The Paper With His Name On It

Daniel read the handwritten note again.

Get Daniel to sign first.

The words were simple. Their meaning wasn't.

He turned the document over, examining the printed heading and the empty signature line. It appeared to be part of a family-services or guardianship-related form, but he couldn't establish its exact purpose from the page alone.

He looked at Claire.

“What is this?””

She crossed her arms.

“I have no idea.””

Daniel lifted the paper.

“Your handwriting is on the back.””

“I write notes all the time.””

“About getting me to sign something involving my daughter?””

“Don't twist my words.””

“You wrote five words, Claire. I'm reading them exactly as they are.””

She looked toward the guests, searching for a sympathetic face.

Nobody offered one.

Denise picked up her purse.

“I think we should leave,” she said quietly to the other guests.

“This family needs privacy.””

Claire seized the opportunity.

“Yes. Everyone should go. This has become an ugly misunderstanding, and I won't have strangers judging my marriage.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No one is stopping anybody from leaving. But nobody is going to pretend they didn't see what happened to Madison today.””

The man in the gray sweater approached the kitchen counter and retrieved his son's jacket.

“Daniel, I'm sorry,” he said.

“I thought this was just a birthday party. I didn't realize—”

“Neither did I,” Daniel replied.

His voice sounded exhausted.

One by one, the guests began gathering their belongings. Some offered Madison quiet words of kindness. Others avoided Claire's eyes.

A little girl with two puffy ponytails approached Madison and held out a wrapped chocolate cupcake.

“My mom brought extras,” she whispered.

“You can have this one.””

Madison looked at the cupcake, then at her father.

Daniel nodded.

She accepted it carefully.

“Thank you.””

The little girl smiled before following her mother toward the door.

Claire watched them leave with an expression of furious disbelief.

“Unbelievable,” she muttered.

“They come into my home, eat my food, and then act like I'm some kind of villain.””

Daniel placed the document on the table.

“Stop making this about the guests.””

“This is my home too.””

“And Madison lives here.””

Claire looked directly at him.

“Exactly. And somebody has to make decisions about what happens in this family.””

Daniel's gaze sharpened.

“What decisions?””

She opened her mouth, then closed it.

He waited.

Finally, Claire pulled out a chair and sat down, smoothing the front of her cream trousers.

“I've been trying to help you.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Help me do what?””

“Raise a child you barely have time for.””

The accusation struck harder than he expected.

Claire continued before he could respond.

“You leave before breakfast. You come home exhausted. You're always answering work calls.

Madison needs structure, and I'm the one providing it. I'm the one making sure she eats properly, does her homework, and behaves.””

“Then why is she afraid of you?””

“Because children don't like being told no.””

Daniel glanced at Madison.

She was standing beside the counter, holding the cupcake in both hands. She hadn't taken a bite.

“Sweetheart,” he said, “you can eat that.””

Madison looked at Claire.

Daniel's heart sank.

“You don't need permission from anyone else.””

Slowly, Madison unwrapped the cupcake.

She took a tiny bite, barely enough to disturb the frosting.

Claire watched her with narrowed eyes.

“See?”” she said.

“This is exactly what I mean. She performs helplessness, and you rush to rescue her.””

Daniel turned back to his wife.

“She's eating a cupcake.””

“She knows what she's doing.””

“No. She's twelve.””

Claire stood abruptly, knocking the chair backward.

“I'm done with this conversation.””

She started toward the kitchen.

Daniel stepped around the table.

“Not yet.””

She stopped.

He held up the document.

“Tell me what this is, or tell me where you got it. If it involves Madison, I need to understand it.””

Claire's eyes flickered toward the paper.

Then she looked away.

“It was something I was researching. Nothing was finalized.””

“Researching what?””

“Options.””

“What options?””

She pressed her lips together.

Daniel felt the pressure building behind his eyes.

“Claire, I am asking you a direct question.””

“And I'm telling you that I was looking into possibilities because I was overwhelmed!””

“Possibilities involving my daughter?””

“Your daughter has made this household miserable!””

Madison dropped the cupcake.

It landed frosting-side down on the counter.

Claire pointed at her.

“Look what you've done now!””

Madison froze.

Daniel stepped between them.

“She dropped a cupcake.””

“She never takes responsibility!””

“She dropped a cupcake, Claire!””

His shout startled even him.

Madison covered her ears.

Daniel immediately lowered his voice.

“I'm sorry, baby. I didn't mean to scare you.””

He crouched and picked up the cupcake wrapper.

“You haven't done anything wrong.””

Madison's face crumpled again.

“I tried to be good,” she whispered.

Daniel looked up at her.

“What?””

“I tried to do everything right. I cleaned the kitchen. I got better grades. I stopped asking for things.””

She swallowed.

“I thought if I made her happy, she would stop being mad at me.””

Daniel couldn't find words.

Madison rubbed her wet cheeks.

“But she kept saying I wasn't really part of the family.””

Claire turned away.

“That's not what I said.””

Madison looked at her.

“You said your life would be easier if I wasn't here.””

Silence.

Daniel slowly stood.

Claire stared at the floor for a moment before lifting her chin.

“I was frustrated. I said things I shouldn't have said. That doesn't make me a monster.””

“No,” Daniel replied.

“But it doesn't make those words disappear.””

He picked up the document and carefully folded it.

“I'm taking this to someone who can explain exactly what it means.””

Claire's eyes widened.

“You wouldn't do that.””

“I would.””

“You'd destroy our marriage over a piece of paper?””

Daniel looked at the notebook lying beside the document.

“No. I'm trying to understand what you've been doing to my daughter while I wasn't paying attention.””

Claire's face hardened.

“You're making a terrible mistake.””

“Maybe. But I'm not going to make another one by ignoring this.””

He slipped both documents into the notebook's back pocket.

Then he turned toward Madison.

“Go get your coat, sweetheart. We're going to take a little time to think.””

Madison looked frightened.

“Are we leaving?””

“For now, we're going somewhere you feel safe.””

“Will I have to come back here?””

Daniel knelt in front of her.

“We'll work that out carefully. You won't have to figure it out alone.””

She nodded, though the fear in her eyes didn't disappear.

As Madison walked toward the hallway, Daniel returned to the table to retrieve his keys.

His phone buzzed.

An email notification appeared on the screen.

The sender was an unfamiliar legal-services office. The subject line read:

*RE: Madison — Supporting Documents Required*

Daniel opened it.

The message referred to an inquiry submitted using his household information. It requested additional documentation before the office could proceed with a consultation.

The date was from three weeks earlier.

Daniel read the message twice.

Then he looked at Claire.

She had been watching him.

“Who contacted that office?”” he asked.

Claire's face turned white.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

Daniel held up his phone.

“Then why does this email refer to an inquiry about Madison?””

May you like

Claire's mouth opened.

And this time, she had no answer ready.
