Chapter 4: The Promise Claire Made Her Keep

For several seconds, Daniel couldn't speak.

The notebook trembled in his hands. Madison stood beside him, her fingers gripping the fabric of his navy work shirt, while Claire remained across the dining room beneath the gold birthday decorations. The sunlight coming through the windows illuminated every face, every abandoned plate, every smear of chocolate frosting.

Nobody moved.

Then Claire laughed.

It was a small, brittle sound, completely different from the warm laugh she used when guests complimented her cooking.

“Daniel, look at yourself,” she said, spreading her hands.

“You're letting a child's imagination turn a birthday party into a courtroom.””

Daniel didn't look away from her.

“Did you tell Madison you'd send her away?””

Claire rolled her eyes.

“I may have told her that if she continued behaving this way, we'd have to consider other arrangements. Parents say things when they're frustrated.””

“Other arrangements?”” Daniel repeated.

“She knows exactly what I meant.””

Madison shook her head.

“No, Daddy. She said you would sign the papers.””

Claire's expression sharpened.

“Madison, stop.””

The girl flinched so violently that Daniel immediately stepped between them.

“Don't speak to her like that.””

“I am her stepmother!””

“And I'm her father.””

The words hung between them.

Claire looked around the dining room, suddenly aware that every guest was watching. Denise stood near the table with her purse in hand. A man in a gray sweater had quietly moved his young son away from the kitchen doorway.

Claire straightened her burgundy blouse.

“This is humiliating,” she said.

“I've spent the entire day preparing a party for your daughter, and now I'm being accused of abusing her because I gave her a consequence.””

Daniel glanced at the untouched frosting on Madison's plate.

“You made her carry garbage while everybody ate her birthday cake.””

“She was disrespectful.””

“She asked for a piece of cake.””

“She had an attitude!””

Madison's fingers tightened around Daniel's sleeve.

He felt her trembling.

That frightened him more than Claire's shouting.

He turned to his daughter.

“Sweetheart, I need you to tell me something. When did she first say she would send you away?””

Madison looked at Claire.

Daniel gently touched her shoulder.

“You can talk to me.””

Madison took a shaky breath.

“Last winter.””

Claire immediately interrupted.

“Oh, for heaven's sake.””

Daniel raised one hand without turning around.

“Let her finish.””

Madison swallowed.

“It was after I got a bad grade on my math test. Claire said you were already spending too much money on me, and if I couldn't even do well in school, I didn't deserve everything you gave me.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“What did you say?””

“I said I was sorry.””

“Then what happened?””

“She told me to go to my room. Later, she came in and said you were tired of taking care of me.””

Daniel felt something cold settle in his stomach.

Madison wiped her nose with the back of her hand.

“She said you wanted a new family. She said you would be happier if I lived somewhere else.””

Claire threw her hands up.

“This is completely fabricated! I never said Daniel wanted to get rid of her.””

Madison's voice became smaller.

“You said he would eventually choose you.””

The guests exchanged horrified glances.

Daniel stared at Claire.

“Did you say that?””

Claire's mouth tightened.

“She takes everything out of context.””

“Then give me the context.””

“Daniel, we are not doing this in front of these people.””

“You were comfortable humiliating my daughter in front of them.””

“That is not what happened!””

Denise stepped closer to the table.

“Claire, I watched you throw that trash bag at Madison. Nobody had to tell me what happened.””

Claire turned on her.

“You have no idea what goes on in this house.””

“No,” Denise replied.

“But I know what I saw.””

For the first time, Claire appeared to realize that her version of events might not survive the afternoon.

She lowered her voice and approached Daniel.

“Please. Think about our marriage. We can discuss this privately. I'll apologize to Madison if that's what you need.””

Daniel looked at her hand when she tried to touch his arm.

He stepped away.

“An apology doesn't explain this notebook.””

“It's a child's diary!””

“Then why are you afraid of it?””

Claire's face went still.

Daniel noticed the pause. So did Madison.

It lasted barely a second, but it was enough to change something in him.

He opened the notebook again and examined the last page. Beneath the underlined sentence, Madison had written a date and several words in tiny handwriting.

He leaned closer.

She said the papers are almost ready.

Daniel looked up.

“What papers?””

Claire blinked.

“What?””

“What papers did you tell Madison were almost ready?””

“Nothing. She's making things up.””

Madison shook her head.

“You told me you were going to make me leave before Daddy found out.””

Claire took a step toward her.

“Madison, you need to stop lying.””

Daniel's voice cracked like a whip.

“Stay where you are.””

Claire stopped.

Her eyes flashed with anger.

“You cannot keep talking to me like I'm some criminal.””

“Then answer the question.””

“There are no papers!””

Madison suddenly reached into her backpack again.

Daniel watched as she pulled out a folded sheet of paper. It was creased into a small rectangle, its edges soft from being handled repeatedly.

“I found this in the kitchen drawer,” she whispered.

“I wasn't trying to take anything. I was looking for a pencil.””

Claire's face drained of color.

“Give me that.””

Madison clutched the paper against her chest.

Daniel held out his hand.

“Let me see it, sweetheart.””

She placed it in his palm.

The sheet was a printed document with several sections, small blocks of text, and a blank signature line near the bottom. Daniel couldn't understand its purpose at first glance. He recognized the names, though.

His name appeared near the top.

So did Madison's.

He read the heading again, his heartbeat suddenly loud in his ears.

“Claire,” he said slowly, “why is my name on this document?””

Claire's lips parted.

No answer came.

Daniel turned the page over, looking for an explanation.

There was a handwritten note on the back.

Five words, written in Claire's unmistakable handwriting.

Get Daniel to sign first.

He looked at his wife.

Across the room, the birthday balloons swayed gently in the air conditioning.

And for the first time, Claire seemed to understand that the secret she'd spent months protecting was no longer entirely under her control.
