Chapter 9 - THE SEAT AT THE TABLE

Two weeks later.

The Moretti mansion was quiet. The storm had passed, and the heavy, suffocating presence of Vanessa Bellini was entirely gone from the house.

The police had found the memory card files to be authentic. They contained decades of financial fraud, embezzlement, and a recorded threat from Vanessa’s father that directly linked them to the tampered medication that caused Luca’s father's fatal heart attack.

The Bellini family was ruined. The arrests had made national news.

I stood in the dining room, smoothing the white linen tablecloth.

Sunlight streamed through the large bay windows, catching the crystal glasses.

The engagement decorations had been thrown away. Today was a different kind of celebration.

The kitchen doors swung open, and Luca walked in carrying a large silver platter of roasted vegetables.

He was wearing a simple blue sweater and jeans. I hadn’t seen him wear a suit since the night of the fire.

“Smells incredible, Hannah,” he smiled, setting the platter down.

“Thank you, Mr. Moretti.”

“Luca, please,” he corrected me gently. “I think we’re past the formalities.”

I smiled. “Okay. Luca.”

He looked around the table. “Is everyone ready?”

As if on cue, the doors to the hallway opened.

Teresa walked in, holding a small silver locket around her neck. It had been polished, the dent carefully smoothed out by a jeweler.

Beside her was Elena.

She looked entirely different. The soot and exhaustion were gone. She wore a beautiful emerald dress, her dark hair falling softly over her shoulders. She looked like a Moretti.

And running ahead of them both was Lily.

“Uncle Luca!” Lily cheered, launching herself at his legs.

Luca laughed, scooping the little girl up and spinning her around.

“Hey there, kiddo. Did you finish your drawing?”

“Yes!” she beamed, waving a piece of crayon-covered paper. “It’s our house!”

She had drawn the mansion. But this time, she had drawn herself playing on the garden swing, surrounded by tall stick figures holding hands.

Teresa wiped a happy tear from her eye.

They all took their seats.

But there was one empty chair remaining.

I started to back away toward the kitchen. “I’ll bring out the main course.”

“Hold on, Hannah,” Luca said.

He walked over to the hallway door and opened it wider.

Standing there, wearing a brand new, tailored grey suit, was Frank.

He held a new walking stick, beautifully carved with a silver handle.

“Come on in, Frank,” Luca smiled warmly.

Frank looked hesitant, his eyes welling with tears as he looked at Elena and Lily.

“I… I’m just staff, son.”

Elena stood up, walking over to the old man. She took his rough hands in hers.

“You kept me alive, Frank. You kept my father’s secret. You are family.”

She gently guided him to the table.

Luca pulled out the chair directly next to Teresa. The place of honor.

Frank sat down, pulling a fresh white handkerchief from his pocket to wipe his eyes.

Teresa smiled, placing her hand over his.

“Welcome home, Frank.”

I watched them all smiling, laughing, passing the food. It was a picture of a family that had been broken, finally pieced back together.

I turned to head to the kitchen, feeling a deep warmth in my chest.

But Luca stopped me again.

“Hannah. Sit down.”
