Chapter 8 - THE SECRET IN THE EYES

The grand foyer was chaotic.

Sirens wailed in the distance. The engagement guests had been ushered out the front doors, whispering frantically as they watched Vanessa being pushed into the back of an estate security car.

Paramedics rushed inside, taking Elena from Luca’s arms and laying her gently on a stretcher.

Teresa and I hurried out of the sitting room with Lily.

When the little girl saw her mother on the stretcher, she broke into a run.

“Mommy!”

“I’m okay, baby,” Elena rasped, reaching out to cup her daughter’s face. “Mommy’s okay.”

Teresa fell to her knees beside the stretcher, sobbing as she finally held her daughter’s hand after thirty years.

“I’m so sorry,” Teresa cried. “I never should have let you go.”

“You didn't know, Mom,” Elena whispered, crying too. “Dad sent me away to keep me safe. I promised him I’d stay hidden until the Bellinis were exposed. I just… I didn't know it would take this long.”

Luca stood quietly nearby, his clothes ruined, his face smeared with ash.

He looked at Lily.

The little girl was holding tightly to her mother’s hand, but her brown eyes kept darting up to look at Luca.

Elena noticed.

“Luca,” Elena said weakly. “Come here.”

He stepped forward.

Elena looked at him, then down at Lily.

“I told you Dad sent me away twenty years ago,” Elena breathed.

Luca nodded slowly. “I know.”

“But I didn't stay away completely.”

Luca frowned.

Elena reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, faded photograph. She handed it to him.

Luca looked at it.

It was a picture of his older brother, Michael. The one who had died in a tragic car accident seven years ago.

In the photo, Michael was smiling, wrapping his arms around a young Elena.

“Michael knew where I was,” Elena whispered, her voice breaking. “He visited me secretly. He supported me when I had nothing.”

Luca stared at the picture, his heart pounding.

“And seven years ago,” Elena continued, crying freely now. “Before he got into that car… he came to see me one last time.”

Elena gently touched Lily’s hair.

“He told me his girlfriend was pregnant. And that Vanessa’s family was threatening her to make sure there were no rival heirs.”

Luca stopped breathing.

He looked down at Lily.

The brown eyes. The familiar chin.

“I took the baby, Luca,” Elena sobbed. “I raised her as my own so they wouldn't hurt her. Because she isn't my daughter.”

Teresa let out a gasp that echoed through the massive foyer.

May you like

Elena looked directly into Luca’s eyes.

“She’s Michael’s.”
