Chapter 11 - THE FINAL PIECE

Teresa frowned, setting her napkin on the table.

“No, dear. I haven’t ordered anything.”

Luca set the box on the table. It was small, roughly the size of a shoebox, taped shut with heavy packing tape.

“Maybe it’s from the lawyers,” Elena suggested, leaning closer. “Finalizing the trust documents?”

Luca pulled a small pocket knife from his jeans and sliced the tape open.

He opened the cardboard flaps.

He peered inside.

For a long moment, he didn't say a word. His expression was completely unreadable.

“Luca?” Teresa asked nervously. “What is it?”

Luca reached into the box.

He pulled out a worn, leather-bound journal.

It was old, the edges frayed and the cover stained with water marks.

Frank gasped.

“That’s your father’s ledger,” the old man whispered, his eyes wide.

Luca slowly opened the book. The pages were filled with his father’s neat, cursive handwriting.

“He kept this with him everywhere,” Luca murmured. “The police said it was missing from his desk the night he died. We thought Vanessa destroyed it.”

“If Vanessa didn't have it,” Elena said, her voice tight, “who mailed it?”

Luca reached back into the box.

There was a single piece of white stationery sitting at the bottom.

He pulled it out and read it silently.

I watched his face soften. A small, sad smile touched the corners of his mouth.

He handed the note to his mother.

Teresa put on her reading glasses. Her hands trembled as she read the words aloud:

“To the Moretti Family,

I found this hidden in my father’s private safe after he was arrested last week. He stole it the night your husband passed. I am returning it because it belongs to you.

I am deeply sorry for the pain my sister and my father have caused your family. They will face justice, but I know that doesn't erase the years you lost.

I hope this book brings you peace.

Sincerely,Julian Bellini.”

Teresa lowered the letter, her eyes shining with fresh tears.

“Julian,” she whispered. “Vanessa’s younger brother.”

“He was just a kid when Dad died,” Luca said quietly. “He must have taken control of the Bellini estate after the arrests.”

Elena looked at the journal. “What’s inside it, Luca?”

Luca flipped to the very last entry.

It was dated the day before his father died.

He cleared his throat, his voice thick with emotion as he read his father’s final words to the room.

“My chest hurts today. I fear my time is running short. But I look out the window at the garden, and I am filled with hope. I have hidden the truth away to protect my daughter. I trust Frank to guard it. I trust Michael to watch over his sister. And I trust Luca to one day put the pieces together. My boys will become good men. My little girl will come home. We will be whole again.”

Luca closed the book.

A profound, beautiful silence settled over the dining room.

Frank wiped a tear from his wrinkled cheek.

Teresa placed her hand on the worn leather cover, finally at peace.

Lily tugged on Elena’s sleeve.

“Mommy,” she whispered loudly. “Can we go play on the swing now?”
