Chapter 51 - The Airfield in the Fog

The rain over Ravenswood Manor hissed as it hit the smoldering timber of the west wing, sending plumes of acrid, gray steam spiraling into the midnight sky. Daniel Vance stood motionless amidst the devastation, the satellite phone clenched so tightly in his fist that the casing creaked against his cracked knuckles. His tactical vest was heavy with rain and soot, his ribs throbbing with every ragged breath he drew. But physical pain was a distant ghost; his mind was consumed by the image burned onto the polaroid—Mason, his innocent six-year-old boy, sitting hollow-eyed aboard a luxury jet heading across the Atlantic.
"Forty-eight hours," Daniel rasped into the dead dial tone.
The Sovereign syndicate had orchestrated it all. Vanessa’s sadistic abuse, the dog collar, the twisted legal ambushes, the hired mercenaries—they were never the endgame. They were merely the meat grinder designed to wear Daniel down, to isolate Mason, and to harvest the child when his spirit was at its most pliable. Emily had known. Emily had tried to build a fortress of legal papers and hidden safes, but the serpent had swallowed her first.
Daniel shoved the satellite phone into his tactical pocket and broke into a dead sprint toward the perimeter gravel path. The sirens of the county police and emergency vehicles were wailing in the valley miles below, clawing their way up the winding mountain pass, but Daniel couldn't afford to be intercepted by local law enforcement. Bureaucracy was a death sentence. By the time authorities filed an international missing child red notice, Mason’s identity would be scrubbed, his mind erased in some high-altitude psychiatric clinic in the Alps.
He bypassed the burning driveway and dove through the thorn-choked tree line behind the old carriage house. Parked beneath a heavy canvas tarp in a forgotten drainage culvert was a customized matte-black Dodge Ram—a ghost vehicle Daniel had staged months ago when the first threats emerged. He ripped the tarp away, smashed the electronic unlock code into the hidden door panel, and jumped into the driver's seat.
Under the floorboard lay three Pelican cases containing unmarked passports, satellite communication relays, and three hundred thousand dollars in mixed bearer bonds and Swiss francs. Daniel hot-wired the auxiliary power unit and slammed his palm onto the steering wheel as the modified twin-turbo diesel engine roared to life.
He didn't dial the FBI. He dialed an encrypted numeric sequence that patched through an offshore relay in the North Sea.
"Identify," a harsh, gravelly voice answered after two clicks.
"Call sign Iron Sight," Daniel said, his voice flat, stripped of all humanity. "Markus, I need a flight manifest that departed Blackwood County regional airstrip twenty minutes ago. Unregistered tail number. Transponder off. Destination: Geneva."
Silence hung on the line for three agonizing seconds. Markus had served with Daniel in special reconnaissance a decade prior before disappearing into private intelligence brokering.
"Daniel... that airspace belongs to the Sovereign," Markus replied, the tremor in his voice unmistakable. "You don't hunt them. Nations don't even hunt them. If they took your boy, he’s already inside the vault."
"Find me the tail number, Markus," Daniel growled, shifting the truck into drive and hurtling down the unpaved logging trail, branches violently whipping the reinforced windshield. "Or the next funeral I attend will be yours."
"Runway four at the abandoned municipal airstrip in Miller’s Creek," Markus snapped back. "A Gulfstream G650 registered to a shell company out of Zurich. Departed twelve minutes ago. Fuel capacity gives them a straight shot to Geneva Cointrin. But they won't land at the main terminal. They use the private subterranean hangars at Montreux."
"Can you get me an intercept?"
"I can get you onto a chartered Gulfstream out of Teterboro in two hours, Daniel. But understand this: once your boots touch Swiss soil, you aren't a father looking for his son. You are an enemy combatant on Sovereign sovereign ground. They will kill you, and they will make Mason watch."
May you like
"Let them try," Daniel said, stomping the accelerator into the floorboards as the truck tore onto the interstate.
