Chapter 41 - The Ghost with the Stitched Smile

The suspension bridge creaked beneath the gale-force winds, cables groaning like dying leviathans against the iron sky. Below, the roaring gorge swallowed the torrent of rain, but on the slick asphalt, the silence between Daniel and Vanessa was deafening.

Her face, illuminated by the harsh halogen floodlights of the armored transport, was a terrifying tapestry of surgical precision and primal malice. The surgical staples tracing her jawline pulled her reconstructed skin into a grotesque, perpetual sneer. Her eyes—unblinking, cold, and burning with an unholy vengeance—locked onto Daniel. In her lap rested the steel collar, its crimson targeting diode pulsing in rhythm with Mason’s frantic heartbeat.

"You look like you’ve seen a ghost, Daniel," Vanessa whispered through the vehicle's external intercom, her voice synthesized and rasping, distorted by vocal cord damage. "Did you really believe a backwater correctional facility and a third-degree burn ward could hold me? You took my home. You took my dignity. You took the Vance empire. Did you honestly think I wouldn't come back for the only thing that matters?"

Daniel did not flinch, though his knuckles were bone-white around the detonator’s dead-man switch. Behind him, Mason trembled against his legs, small fingers digging through the soaked fabric of Daniel’s tactical jacket. Daniel could feel the child’s terror vibrating through his own flesh—a visceral terror born on an immaculate afternoon when a collar had first clicked around a six-year-old’s throat.

"You’re already dead, Vanessa," Daniel said, his voice flat, cutting through the howling wind like an obsidian blade. "You died the moment you touched my boy. Everything standing on that ramp is just rot looking for a grave."

"Always the righteous protector," Marcus sneered from the perimeter, his submachine gun leveled at Daniel’s head. "Look at him, Vanessa. Still pretending he has cards to play. Drop the switch, Daniel, or the doctor presses the bypass."

Beside Vanessa, the man in the pristine lab coat smiled thinly, holding a tablet with a biometric override. The blue diode shifted to an ominous, blinding ultraviolet.

"Mason, darling," Vanessa purred, leaning forward against her titanium wrist restraints, her stitched mouth stretching until the skin pulled taut against bone. "Come to Mother. Look at the collar. It misses your neck. It was made just for you. If you walk across the line, Daddy gets to live. If you don't... the current won't stop until his heart bursts."

Mason peered out from behind Daniel’s hip. His voice, small yet resolute, cut through the rain. "You aren't my mother. You're the monster from the garden."

Vanessa’s expression shattered, the veneer of aristocratic elegance warping into raw, feral rage. "Kill the father," she hissed into the microphone. "Take the boy!"

Daniel didn't wait. Instead of releasing the dead-man switch to blow the bridge, he smashed the emergency override sequence he had memorized from the dam schematics, jamming the frequency trigger into the road deck’s expansion joint, and reached for the smoke grenade clipped to his chest.
