Chapter 20 - The Headlights in the Storm

At 2:15 AM, the storm returned with sudden, violent ferocity.

Thunder rattled the foundation of the house, shaking the picture frames on the hallway walls.

Daniel was jolted awake by the shrill, high-pitched scream of the master perimeter security siren.

He jumped out of bed, grabbing his tactical flashlight and his licensed firearm from the bedside biometric safe.

He sprinted into the hallway, his heart pounding in his throat.

"Mason!" Daniel shouted, rushing into his son’s room.

Mason was sitting up in bed, trembling, his hands clamped over his ears from the blaring alarm.

"Dad! What’s that sound?"

"Stay in bed, Mason! Pull the blanket up and stay down!" Daniel ordered, closing Mason's bedroom door and locking it from the outside.

Daniel rushed down the stairs, his weapon ready, his eyes scanning the pitch-black living room.

On the wall-mounted security console, the front driveway sensor was flashing bright red:

"SECURITY BREACH: VEHICLE ON PERIMETER DRIVEWAY."

Daniel peered through the heavy front window blinds.

Through the blinding downpour of rain, a pair of high-beam halogen headlights illuminated the front lawn.

A black, unmarked SUV was parked directly across the front walkway, its engine idling with a low, rumbling growl.

Daniel’s phone began to vibrate violently on the entrance console table.

The caller ID showed: "UNKNOWN CALLER - ENCRYPTED."

Daniel picked up the phone, keeping his eyes glued to the idling vehicle outside.

He pressed the receiver to his ear.

"Who is this?" Daniel demanded, his voice trembling with adrenaline.

A woman’s voice came through the line, calm, cold, and utterly unfamiliar.

It was not Vanessa.

It was not Diane.

It was not Rebecca.

"Mr. Vance," the voice said with chilling politeness.

"You did a remarkable job cleaning up the mess my mother and sister left behind."

Daniel froze, his fingers tightening around the firearm until his skin turned white.

"Who are you?" Daniel whispered.

"My name is Charlotte Vance," the voice purred smoothly through the speaker.

"Rebecca's eldest daughter."

"The one your father sent away to boarding school in Zurich twenty years ago."

"The one who actually controls the Vance offshore trust holding your house."

A flash of lightning illuminated the front yard.

The driver’s side door of the black SUV slowly swung open.

A tall woman in an immaculate trench coat stepped out into the pouring rain, holding a long black umbrella.

She looked directly up at the second-story window where Mason’s room was located.

"Julian thought he took all the money, Daniel," Charlotte said through the phone, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper.

"Vanessa thought the collar would break the boy."

"They were all amateurs."

"Look at the passenger side of my car, Daniel."

The passenger door of the SUV slowly opened.

A figure stepped out into the rain, holding a small digital camera.

It was a teenage boy, tall, thin, with dark hair and hazel eyes that were an exact, terrifying mirror of Emily’s face.

"Tell me, Daniel," Charlotte whispered into his ear as thunder cracked across the sky.

"Did Emily ever tell you about the twin brother Mason had who supposedly died in the hospital nursery seven years ago?"

Daniel dropped the phone onto the floor, the world shattering into absolute silence around him.
