Chapter 16 - The Ambush at the Garden House

By nine o'clock that evening, the Vance residence was bathed in heavy darkness.
All interior lights were switched off, leaving only the blue ambient glow of the garden floodlights filtering through the weeping willow trees.
Mason was safely tucked away at an undisclosed safe house under the protection of Caroline and two armed federal marshals.
Daniel sat alone in the darkened living room, seated in the armchair facing the glass patio doors.
Behind him, concealed in the shadows of the pantry and the second-floor landing, Kowalski and four tactical officers waited in absolute silence.
The rain began to fall in heavy, rhythmic sheets, tapping against the glass like restless fingers.
At 9:42 PM, the motion sensor at the far perimeter of the rose garden flickered red on Kowalski’s tactical tablet.
A figure draped in a dark hooded raincoat bypassed the iron gate using an old brass maintenance key.
The figure moved with intimate familiarity across the sodden lawn.
Past the fence where Mason had been forced to kneel with the leather collar around his neck.
Past the stone bench where Vanessa had staged her cruel afternoon tea.
The patio door handle rattled softly.
The latch gave way with a faint mechanical click.
Rebecca Vance stepped into the dark living room, pulling down her soaked hood.
Her silver hair was damp, framing sharp, calculating eyes that surveyed the room.
She carried a heavy leather tote bag and a crowbar wrapped in a dark towel.
She took three steps toward the hallway leading to Emily’s study.
A lamp clicked on.
Warm yellow light flooded the room, illuminating Rebecca’s startled face.
Daniel sat in the armchair, his arms resting on the armrests, staring at her with cold, unblinking eyes.
"Good evening, Rebecca," Daniel said quietly.
Rebecca froze, her eyes widening in momentary shock before hardening into an icy sneer.
"Daniel," she said smoothly, not dropping the crowbar.
"You always were an unimaginative boy, just like your father."
"You shouldn't be here tonight."
"I could say the exact same thing to a ghost," Daniel replied, leaning forward.
"Ten years hiding in the cold, Rebecca."
"All to steal the money my father earned with his bare hands."
Rebecca let out a sharp, mocking laugh that cut through the silence of the house.
"Your father promised me that estate!" she hissed, taking a step forward.
"He promised me this house, these grounds, everything!"
"Then he found out about Diane's debts and changed the will behind my back!"
"He left me nothing but a monthly allowance while Emily lived like a queen in this mansion!"
"So you poisoned Emily," Daniel said, his voice flat and steady.
Rebecca didn't deny it.
A cold, triumphant smirk played across her thin lips.
"Emily was weak," Rebecca spat.
"A fragile little girl who had everything handed to her."
"A few drops of digitalis extract in her chamomile tea each evening."
"Her heart gave out naturally, without a single red flag on the standard blood panels."
"And if your pathetic little son hadn't walked into the room that afternoon, Vanessa would have been running this house without a single hiccup."
"You put a collar on my seven-year-old child," Daniel said, every word dripping with cold venom.
"Because he remembered the tea," Rebecca replied, her eyes devoid of human warmth.
"The boy was a loose thread."
"If he had stayed silent, he would have lived comfortably in a private boarding school in Switzerland."
"Instead, you ruined everything with your little theatrical rescue."
"Now, step aside, Daniel."
"The safe in Emily's desk contains the bearer bonds."
"Give me the combination, or I will make sure Mason joins his mother before the sun comes up."
Daniel slowly shook his head, a chilling smile touching his lips.
"You didn't check the perimeter, Rebecca."
From the shadows behind the kitchen island and the staircase, four tactical officers emerged, their service weapons raised.
"Police! Drop the crowbar! Hands where we can see them!" Kowalski’s voice boomed through the living room.
Rebecca spun around, her face twisting in utter horror.
The crowbar slipped from her leather-gloved fingers, clattering loudly against the hardwood floor.
May you like
Kowalski stepped forward with metal handcuffs gleaming in his hand.
"Rebecca Vance, you are under arrest for the murder of Emily Vance, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit child endangerment."
