Chapter 10 - The Box That Survived the Storm

The peace of the morning shattered as Luca held the tarnished silver key to the light.

Lily shifted in her sleep, burying her face deeper into Isabella’s sweater.

"Isabella," Luca said, his voice low to avoid waking their daughter. "If you threw this in the lake twenty years ago, how did Lily get it?"

Isabella carefully slid out from under Lily, letting Luca cradle the sleeping girl. She took the key, her hands shaking so violently she nearly dropped it.

"I don't know," Isabella whispered. "I swore I watched it sink."

Marco leaned forward from the armchair. "Vanessa must have dredged it up. But why give it to Lily?"

"Because," a new voice croaked from the doorway.

They all whipped around.

Standing in the frame, shivering and wrapped in an old emergency blanket, was Vanessa. Her red hair was plastered to her skull, her lips blue, but her eyes burned with defiant fire. She had survived the current.

Marco immediately stood, reaching for his holster, but he had lost his gun in the water.

"Call the police," Luca barked at Ruth, shielding Lily with his body.

"Go ahead," Vanessa coughed, leaning against the doorframe. "Arrest me. But you need to know what's in that lockbox first."

"It's just my father's old debt ledgers," Isabella spat, tears of pure rage welling in her eyes. "You're finished, Vanessa."

"No," Vanessa smiled thinly. "I opened it a year ago. It wasn't debt ledgers, Izzy. It was a diary."

Isabella froze.

"He wrote down everything," Vanessa said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Everything you did to protect me. And everything you lied about."

She pointed a trembling finger at the sleeping child in Luca's arms.

"Did you tell your perfect husband, Isabella?" Vanessa taunted. "Did you tell him whose child that really is?"

The room went dead silent.

Luca slowly turned to Isabella. Her face was ashen, her breathing shallow and panicked.

"Isabella?" Luca asked softly. "What is she talking about?"

"Don't listen to her," Isabella choked out, stepping toward Vanessa. "She's lying."

"Am I?" Vanessa laughed, a wet, rattling sound. "Take the key, Luca. Go to the First National Bank in Manhattan. Box 402. Open it."

Before anyone could move, police sirens wailed in the distance, growing rapidly louder. The local sheriff's department had arrived.

Vanessa didn't run. She simply sat down on the floor, raising her hands.

"I lost the battle," Vanessa whispered, looking directly at Luca. "But you're going to lose your family."

Two hours later, Vanessa was in custody. Marco surrendered himself peacefully, promising to testify to everything.

But as Luca loaded Lily into the back of the SUV, Isabella stood by the open passenger door, staring at the woods.

Luca walked up to her, holding up the silver key.

"We're going to the bank," Luca said, his voice void of emotion. "Aren't we?"

May you like

Isabella closed her eyes, a single tear cutting a path down her cheek.

"Yes," she whispered. "And when we do, I will lose you forever."
