Chapter 8 - The Bracelet That Broke the Past

The heavy wooden doors of the Saint Jude convent groaned as Luca pushed them open. The sanctuary was dark, lit only by dozens of flickering votive candles.
He was trapped in an impossible nightmare. Vanessa had Lily. But Isabella—his wife, the love of his life—was somewhere in this building, believing he was the architect of her destruction.
"Isabella!" Luca shouted, his voice echoing off the vaulted stone ceilings. "Isabella, please!"
A figure emerged from the shadows near the altar.
She wore a simple grey cardigan and dark slacks. Her dark hair was longer now, streaked with silver. But the way she held her shoulders, the fierce, defensive tilt of her chin—it was her.
Isabella.
She stopped ten feet away, her eyes wide with terror. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, snub-nosed revolver, aiming it directly at Luca's chest.
"Don't come any closer," she commanded, her voice shaking but resolute.
Luca dropped to his knees right there in the center aisle, sliding his own gun across the stone floor toward her.
"I don't want to hurt you, Izzy," Luca pleaded, using the nickname he hadn't spoken in four years. "I never did. It was Vanessa. It was always Vanessa."
Isabella’s grip on the gun didn't waver. "You hired the men, Luca. I saw the bank transfers. You wanted the company all to yourself."
"Those were forged!" Luca yelled, desperate. "Vanessa manipulated the accounts! She blackmailed Marco to corroborate her lies. She made you believe I was a monster so you would run, and she could take your place!"
Isabella hesitated, a flicker of doubt crossing her face.
Luca slowly reached into his jacket pocket. Isabella flinched, tightening her grip on the gun.
He pulled out the old photograph he had found in the envelope—the one of teenage Isabella and Vanessa at summer camp.
"Ruth told me everything," Luca said softly. "I know she's your sister. I know what she did to your father."
Isabella lowered the gun an inch, a sob catching in her throat.
"She killed him," Isabella whispered, the traumatic secret finally spilling out. "Our father was an abusive drunk. When I was sixteen, Vanessa pushed him down the stairs. I covered for her. I took her away, changed our names. I gave her everything. And she hated me for it."
Isabella looked down at her wrist. She was still wearing the woven friendship bracelet from the photograph, faded and frayed.
"She hated me because I was the one who saved her," Isabella wept. "She wanted to destroy my life because it was perfect. She wanted to prove she could take it."
Luca slowly stood up, closing the distance between them. He wrapped his arms around his wife, burying his face in her hair. She dropped the gun, collapsing against him, twenty years of running finally over.
They held each other in the candlelight, broken but alive.
Then, Luca's phone rang.
He pulled it out and put it on speaker.
"How touching," Vanessa's voice echoed through the empty church. "A beautiful reunion."
Isabella gasped, clutching Luca's arm.
"Where is my daughter, Vanessa?" Luca roared.
"She's right here, Daddy," Lily's small, frightened voice came through the speaker. "We're on a boat."
Luca's blood ran cold. The lake.
"She doesn't know how to swim, Vanessa," Isabella screamed at the phone. "Please!"
"I know," Vanessa replied smoothly. "You have twenty minutes to get to the old dock. Bring the original police report from our father's death, Isabella. The one you hid. Or I'll see if the little bird can fly."
The line went dead.

Isabella looked at Luca, absolute terror in her eyes. "She wants the only evidence that ties her to the murder."
"She isn't going to get it," Luca said, his eyes burning with a cold, terrifying fire. "She's going to get me."
