Chapter 6 - THE REVEAL

The silence in Le Miroir was no longer just quiet—it was suffocating.

Arthur Sterling’s face went completely pale. He scrambled out of his chair, pulling his reading glasses out of his coat pocket to stare intensely at the phone screen.

"That... that's the seal of the Sterling-Vanderbilt Holdings," Arthur stammered, his voice trembling violently. "Wait... Maya? Maya... Maya Vanderbilt?!"

The entire dining room seemed to gasp in unison.

The name Vanderbilt in Manhattan wasn't just old money; it was the foundation upon which the city’s private real estate was built. Maya Vanderbilt was the notoriously reclusive heiress to the Vanderbilt estate—a woman who had spent the last three years living under the radar, visiting her family’s vast portfolio of businesses incognito to clean out corrupt management and toxic culture.

Richard, the manager who had just grabbed her arm and fired her, felt his knees turn to jelly. He backed into a serving station, knocking over a tray of silver spoons that crashed noisily against the floor.

"V-Vanderbilt?" Richard squeaked. "No... no, she’s Maya the lunch server! She’s been here for three weeks!"

"She’s been evaluating your customer service and leadership, you idiot!" Evelyn Vance shouted, finally breaking her stoic composure. Evelyn stepped around the table and shoved her daughter-in-law’s shoulder. "You fool! You utter fool, Victoria!"

Victoria stared at Maya, her jaw hanging open, her mind refusing to accept the reality unfolding before her eyes. "No... no! You're a waitress! You clean tables! You handle dirty dishes!"

"I like to understand how my family's businesses operate from the ground up," Maya said casually, slipping her phone back into her pocket. "I find it's the best way to spot trash before it ruins the house."

Maya looked directly at Victoria’s crimson dress.

"And tonight, Victoria... I found a lot of trash."
