Chapter 18 - The Whispering Shadows of Betrayal

Late that night,
a violent rainstorm descended upon the high-rise towers of downtown Chicago.
In his private office on the top floor of the Sterling Financial Building,
Vincent Sterling stood by the window,
staring out at the misty city lights,
his face twisted into a mask of pure rage.
Richard Hayes sat across from the massive oak desk,
wiping sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief.
"We lost the pier injunction,
Mr.
Sterling,"
Hayes reported nervously,
his voice trembling.
"The federal judge blocked our asset seizure,"
"and the news channels are airing interviews with the dockworkers praising Hannah Cole."
"I don't care about the news!"
Sterling roared,
slamming his heavy fist onto the glass desk,
shattering a crystal pen holder.
"Mercer is turning the entire city against us!"
"He gave federal prosecutors thirty years of mob records,"
"and now his charity girl is blocking my corporate takeovers!"
Sterling turned around,
his eyes burning with a dark,
desperate madness.
"Where is Victor?"
Sterling demanded quietly.
"Victor?"
Hayes gasped,
his face turning white as paper.
"Mr.
Sterling,
Victor is a mercenary who operates outside the country."
"If you bring him into Chicago,"
"the federal authorities will declare martial law on our operations!"
"I want Nathan Mercer dead,"
Sterling whispered,
his tone cold,
flat,
and unhinged.
"I want the girl brought to my estate,"
"and I want the Liam Cole Center burned to ash before sunrise."
Unbeknownst to Sterling,
a tiny electronic bug hidden inside the bronze clock on his desk was transmitting every single word directly to a secure receiver.
Miles away,
in the Lake Forest command room,
Nathan sat with Marco and Hannah,
listening to the audio feed playing through the crisp speakers.
Hannah felt a cold shiver run down her spine as Sterling's terrifying words filled the quiet room.
"He's completely lost his mind,"
Hannah whispered,
clasping her hands together tightly to stop them from shaking.
"He doesn't care about money anymore;"
"he just wants destruction."
"He's desperate,"
Nathan said calmly,
standing up from the leather chair.
"When a predator realizes he is cornered,"
"he strikes out at anything close to him."
"Marco,"
Nathan commanded,
turning to his security chief.
"Activate the federal task force."
"Special Agent Marcus Vance has been waiting for this exact recording."
"What about Victor?"
Marco asked,
his face grim.
"Victor is an elite sniper who served in overseas PMC units."
"He won't use standard tactics."
"He will try to attack the estate from the perimeter woods during the storm."
Nathan walked over to the gun safe built into the wall,
keying in his private security code.
The heavy steel door clicked open,
revealing several high-grade tactical sidearms and defense gear.
"Let him come,"
Nathan said softly,
his voice dropping into a dark register that made the room grow cold.
"He thinks he is entering a soft civilian target."
"He is walking into the house of Nathan Mercer."
Hannah walked over to Nathan,
placing her warm hand on his arm,
stopping him from reaching for the weapons.
"Nathan,"
she said softly,
her eyes searching his face with intense tenderness.
"Promise me you won't let him turn you back into the man you used to be."
Nathan paused,
looking down at her beautiful,
anxious face,
feeling the deep bond of love that had transformed his entire existence.
He closed the gun safe door slowly,
locking it back up with a solid click.
"I won't,"
he promised,
taking her face into his strong hands,
kissing her lips gently.
"I don't need weapons to protect us tonight,
Hannah."
"I have the truth,"
May you like
"I have the law,"
"and I have you."
