Chapter 12 - Shadows in High Places

By Monday afternoon,

the news of Dante Moretti's arrest had sent shockwaves through the political and criminal underbelly of Illinois.

While the news channels praised federal authorities for bringing down a decades-old crime syndicate,

the real power players in Chicago were panicking behind closed doors.

I sat in the high-backed leather chair of my penthouse office in River North,

staring at a formal legal summons resting on my desk.

The gold seal at the top bore the crest of the State's Attorney's Office.

It was signed by District Attorney Julian Vance.

Julian Vance was a smooth,

silver-tongued prosecutor who had spent the last twelve years climbing the political ladder on Michigan Avenue.

To the public,

he was a crusader against corruption.

To those of us who knew how the city truly operated,

Vance was the silent partner who had taken bribe money from Dante Moretti to keep federal investigations focused elsewhere.

Now that Dante was facing a lifetime in prison,

Vance was terrified that Dante's legal team would turn state's evidence and expose Vance's secret bank accounts in the Cayman Islands.

And Vance needed a scapegoat to cover his tracks.

The private elevator doors chimed softly,

and Marco stepped into the office,

carrying a leather briefcase.

"Boss,"

Marco said,

his brow furrowed with concern.

"Julian Vance just called a press conference for five o'clock at the Federal Plaza.

He intends to announce a sweeping indictment targeting Mercer Logistics."

"On what grounds?"

I asked calmly,

leaning back in my chair and lacing my fingers together.

"Racketeering and financial conspiracy,"

Marco revealed,

setting a stack of documents on my desk.

"Vance is manufacturing evidence to claim that your logistics company was the primary pipeline for Moretti's illegal cargo.

He wants to seize your assets,

freeze your accounts,

and throw you in a federal detention center before you can release your own evidence against him."

I picked up the summons,

holding it up to the afternoon light filtering through the floor-to-ceiling glass.

"Julian Vance is playing a desperate hand,"

I noted,

a cold smile touching my lips.

"He knows that if I walk free,

I will hand over the audio recordings of his meetings with Dante to the Department of Justice.

He is trying to strike first."

"What are your orders,

boss?"

Marco asked,

his hand instinctively dropping near his sidearm.

"Should we handle Vance quietly?"

"No,"

I answered sharply.

"Hannah made me a promise,

and I made one to her.

We don't use blood to solve problems anymore,

Marco.

We use absolute,

irrefutable truth."

Before Marco could respond,

the office door swung open,

and Hannah stepped inside.

She was wearing a simple navy blazer over a crisp white blouse,

her hair pulled back into a neat braid.

She held a manila folder in her hands,

her eyes filled with a fierce,

unshakeable determination.

"You don't have to face Julian Vance alone,

Nathan,"

she said,

walking straight up to my desk.

I looked at her,

surprised by her sudden presence in my corporate headquarters.

"Hannah,

this is legal warfare,"

I warned her gently.

"Julian Vance is a ruthless politician who will tear down anyone standing near me.

I won't let him drag your name through the mud."

"He already tried,"

she countered,

opening the folder and sliding a set of bank statements across my desk.

"I spent the last four hours at the Bridge House financial office with our head auditor.

Look at those wire transfers from 2021."

I looked down at the documents.

They showed a series of suspicious monthly deposits made into Bridge House's building repair account,

originating from a shell corporation called Vanguard Holdings.

"Vanguard Holdings is Julian Vance's personal real estate company,"

Hannah revealed,

her voice ringing with cold intelligence.

"Five years ago,

Vance tried to force our landlord,

Arthur Vance—who happens to be Julian Vance's cousin—to sell the shelter building so Vance could redevelop the block into luxury condominiums.

When we refused to leave,

Vance used Moretti's thugs to harass us."

I stared at the papers,

a surge of icy realization washing over me.

"Vance wasn't just taking bribes from Moretti,"

I said softly,

my eyes narrowing.

"Vance was using Moretti as his personal enforcement arm to clear real estate across the South Side."

"Exactly,"

Hannah said,

leaning over the desk,

her brown eyes burning with a fierce light.

"Julian Vance isn't a crusader,

Nathan.

He is the architect of the corruption that destroyed my neighborhood.

And I am going to stand right beside you at that press conference at five o'clock and tell the entire city what he did."

I looked at her small frame,

feeling a wave of immense pride and profound awe swell within my heart.

She wasn't just a woman I wanted to protect;

she was a partner who stood unflinching in the face of the darkest storms Chicago could summon.

I stood up from my chair,

walked around the desk,

and gently framed her face with my hands.

"You are extraordinary,

Hannah Cole,"

I whispered into the quiet space between us.

She leaned her cheek into my palm,

her eyes softening as she looked up into mine.

"I told you,"

she murmured with a small,

radiant smile,

May you like

"vulnerability is the only thing that keeps us human.

Now let's go destroy a corrupt politician."
