Chapter 16 - The Shadow Council’s Wrath

The news of Nathan Mercer’s engagement to Hannah Cole spread like wildfire through the elite circles of Chicago,
striking fear and anger into the hearts of the old syndicate bosses.
While the citizens of Western Avenue celebrated the opening of the Liam Cole Center,
a secret meeting was taking place in a luxury penthouse suite overlooking Lake Michigan.
The room was filled with five men in expensive bespoke suits,
the leaders of the Midwest Syndicate Council,
headed by a man named Vincent Sterling.
Vincent Sterling was a ruthless,
sixty-year-old billionaire banker,
a man who had spent forty years using mob muscle to enforce his hidden corporate empire.
"Nathan Mercer has betrayed our sacred code,"
Sterling declared,
his cold voice echoing off the polished marble walls.
"He turned Dante Moretti over to the federal authorities,"
"and now he is transferring his vast wealth into public foundations run by a schoolteacher."
"If Mercer goes completely clean,"
another syndicate leader warned,
his fingers trembling around a crystal glass of scotch,
"our financial pipelines through Chicago's industrial ports will be exposed to federal scrutiny."
"Then we crush him,"
Sterling replied smoothly,
swirling the dark amber liquid in his glass with slow,
calculated precision.
"We don't attack his body with uneducated street thugs."
"We destroy his foundation,"
"we freeze his corporate assets,"
"and we strip away everything that makes him valuable to that young woman."
Meanwhile,
at the Lake Forest estate,
Nathan and Hannah were enjoying a quiet,
peaceful evening in the grand library.
The heavy stone fireplace crackled softly in the hearth,
casting a gentle,
golden light across the tall mahogany bookshelves.
Hannah was sitting comfortably on the dark leather sofa,
her head resting against Nathan's shoulder,
holding his hand tightly in her soft grip.
"I still can't believe all of this is real,"
she whispered softly,
her thumb tracing the delicate silver engagement ring on her finger.
"It's real,
Hannah,"
Nathan replied,
leaning down to kiss the top of her dark brown hair gently.
"The dark days are behind us,"
"and the monsters who controlled this city are finally behind iron bars."
Suddenly,
the heavy mahogany doors of the library swung open,
and Marco stepped into the room,
his expression grave,
tense,
and deeply troubled.
"Boss,"
Marco said,
his voice strained with urgent concern,
"we have a massive,
unprecedented financial assault occurring right now."
"The State Banking Commission just placed a temporary freeze on the accounts of the Liam Cole Foundation,"
"and three major shipping contracts of Mercer Logistics were abruptly canceled five minutes ago."
Hannah sat up straight,
her eyes widening with sudden shock and disbelief.
"Who could possibly freeze the foundation's accounts?"
she asked,
her voice rising in defensive anger.
"We passed every federal audit with flying colors!"
"Vincent Sterling,"
Nathan answered quietly,
his dark eyes turning into hard,
unforgiving flint as he stood up from the leather sofa.
"The man who pulled Dante Moretti's strings from behind the curtain for twenty years."
Nathan walked toward his desk,
his posture turning rigid,
commanding,
and deadly once again.
"Sterling thinks he can starve us out financially,"
Nathan said softly,
looking at Marco through the dim firelight.
"He thinks that if he strips away my wealth,"
"I will become weak and defenseless."
"What are your orders,
boss?"
Marco asked,
his hand resting near his sidearm.
"Should I call the heavy tactical team?"
"No,"
Hannah spoke up firmly,
standing beside Nathan,
her eyes burning with unyielding determination.
"We don't need tactical teams for a bank."
"Vincent Sterling wants a war over papers and public opinion,"
"so we are going to give him one."
Nathan looked at Hannah,
surprised by the fierce,
unshakable courage radiating from her small frame.
"Hannah,"
Nathan warned softly,
"Vincent Sterling is far more dangerous than Dante Moretti."
"He doesn't shoot people on street corners;"
"he destroys entire lives with a single signature."
"Then it's a good thing I know how to read his financial ledgers,"
May you like
Hannah replied with a calm,
defiant smile that filled the dark room with hope.
