Chapter 28

The northern woods were a wall of black timber and frozen pine,
The air was so thin it felt like breathing needles,
Alessandro moved through the undergrowth with the silence of a ghost,
Michael was twenty yards to his left, a shadow among shadows,
The hunting lodge sat in a clearing, its windows glowing with orange light,
It was a fortress of logs and stone, a monument to a violent past,
This was where Alessandro’s father had brought him for his first hunt,
This was where he had learned that the world is divided into two groups,
Those who pull the trigger and those who wait for the sound,
He reached the edge of the clearing, his breath a faint mist in the air,
He could see the cousins through the window, sitting around a table,
They were drinking expensive brandy and laughing over maps,
Vittorio’s sons, Marco and Luca, looking like parodies of their father,
They thought they had won because they had forced the king to run,
They didn't realize that a king is most dangerous when he is hunted,
Alessandro signaled to Michael, a sharp, two-fingered gesture,
The power lines at the back of the lodge were the first to go,
The orange light vanished, replaced by a sudden, suffocating dark,
The laughter inside the lodge turned into shouts of confusion,
Alessandro didn't use a silencer; he wanted them to hear him,
He kicked the front door open, the wood splintering under his boot,
He stepped into the room as a flare hissed to life in the clearing,
The red light bathed everything in the color of old blood,
"Marco, Luca," Alessandro said, his voice a calm, terrifying echo,
The cousins scrambled for their weapons, but they were slow,
Their hands were soft from years of living off Alessandro’s scraps,
"Don't move," Michael commanded from the shadows of the hallway,
The red flare flickered, casting long, dancing shadows on the walls,
"Alessandro, wait!" Marco cried, his voice cracking with fear,
"We were just trying to protect the family interests!"
"You were trying to murder a child," Alessandro said, stepping forward,
"You were trying to use my daughter as a bargaining chip,"
"That is not family interest. That is a death sentence,"
He looked at the maps on the table, the locations of his safe houses,
They had been thorough, he had to give them that,
They had been planning this since the day he canceled the wedding,
"Who gave you the coordinates?" Alessandro asked,
"Was it Dominic? Or did you find a way into the main server?"
"It was Bianca," Luca spat, his face twisted with a desperate spite,
"She knew everything. She wanted you broken more than we did,"
"She told us where you were taking the girl,"
Alessandro felt a cold stone settle in his heart,
Bianca had been the mole, the rot inside the house all along,
She hadn't just been a scorned bride; she had been a weapon,
"Where is the rest of the money?" Alessandro asked,
"The offshore accounts you used to hire the mercenaries,"
"We won't tell you anything!" Marco shouted, trying to sound brave,
Alessandro didn't argue. He fired a single shot into the table,
The mahogany exploded, sending splinters into Marco’s face,
"I didn't come here for a conversation," Alessandro said,
"I came here to perform an audit of your lives,"
"And the balance is zero,"
He spent the next hour breaking them, not with violence, but with truth,
He showed them the documents Claire had prepared,
The evidence of their embezzlement, their secret deals with rivals,
He showed them that he had already stripped them of their names,
They were no longer Rizzanos. They were just men in a cold room,
"You will sign the confessions, and you will leave the country,"
"If I ever see your faces again, I won't use a flare,"
"I will let the darkness handle you,"
By the time the sun began to peek over the trees, the cousins were gone,
Escorted by Michael to a waiting car that would take them to exile,
Alessandro stood alone in the ruins of the hunting lodge,
The fireplace was cold, and the air tasted of cordite and ash,
He had won the battle, but he felt no victory,
He felt only the weight of the crown he had tried to throw away,
He looked at his hands, expecting to see blood,
But they were clean, at least on the surface,
He walked out into the crisp morning air, his boots crunching on the frost,
He was going back to the safe house, back to Livia and Rosalie,
But he knew that the man who returned would be different,
The king was back on his throne, but the throne was made of ice,
And the ice was beginning to melt.
