Chapter 26

The tires hummed a mournful song against the wet pavement,
The rain continued to lash the armored glass of the sedan,
Alessandro kept his eyes fixed on the ribbon of road ahead,
His hands were steady on the wheel, but his mind was a storm,
He could hear Livia’s shallow, frightened breathing in the back,
Rosalie was whispering a lullaby that had no melody,
A desperate attempt to stitch back together a shattered peace,
Michael sat in the passenger seat, his eyes scanning the mirrors,
Every set of headlights behind them was a potential threat,
Every shadow under a highway overpass was a ghost,
Alessandro felt the old, cold machinery of his soul clicking into place,
The father was still there, but the protector had taken the lead,
He thought of the cottage they had left behind in the mud,
The place where he had learned that roses have thorns for a reason,
He thought of Bianca’s face in the flash of the lightning,
A woman consumed by a hunger that no amount of money could sate,
She had become a monster of his own making, a product of his world,
The city lights began to glow on the horizon like a burning forest,
They were moving toward the center of the infection,
The place where the Rizzano name still carried the weight of lead,
"Are we safe yet, Daddy?" Livia whispered from the darkness,
The question pierced through his armor like a serrated blade,
"Not yet, sweetheart, but we are moving fast," he replied,
He hated that he had to lie to her, even in the smallest way,
Safety was a country they had been exiled from tonight,
He looked at Michael, whose face was illuminated by the dashboard,
"Who else was on that beach, Michael? Give me names,"
"Vittorio’s youngest sons, and a handful of mercenaries," Michael said,
"They called themselves the 'True Rizzanos,' a joke of a title,"
"But they have the funding of men who hate your progress,"
Alessandro tightened his grip on the steering wheel,
He knew those cousins, boys who had grown up in the shadow of his father,
They wanted the old days back, the days of fear and easy blood,
They saw Alessandro’s legitimacy as a betrayal of their birthright,
"They think I am weak because I love my daughter," Alessandro mused,
"They think mercy is a symptom of a dying mind,"
"They are going to learn that love is the most violent thing I own,"
The car sped through a toll booth without slowing down,
The engine roared as they hit the open stretches of the industrial belt,
This was the land of warehouses and secrets, of quiet deaths,
Alessandro was taking them to a safe house known only to him,
A place built by his father for a war that never came,
He saw Rosalie looking at him in the rearview mirror,
Her eyes were filled with a question he wasn't ready to answer,
She saw the change in him, the sharpening of his edges,
The way his voice had lost the warmth of the coastal sun,
He was becoming the man the Rizzanos had bred him to be,
A predator who would burn the world to keep his cub warm,
The rain began to taper off as they entered the city limits,
But the dampness remained, clinging to the soul like a shroud,
"We are almost there," Alessandro said to the silent cabin,
He turned into a side street lined with rusted fences,
The gate to the compound opened with a heavy, mechanical groan,
They were inside the fortress now, back in the belly of the beast,
He parked the car and turned off the engine, the silence sudden,
He stayed there for a moment, listening to the cooling metal,
He was home, and yet he had never been further from it,
He climbed out and opened the back door, gathering Livia in his arms,
She was small and warm, the only real thing in a world of ghosts,
He walked toward the heavy steel door of the safe house,
Rosalie followed, her steps echoing on the concrete,
He looked back at the city, at the towering monuments of his past,
The war had returned to the streets that had birthed it,
And Alessandro Rizzano was ready to write the final chapter,
With ink made of fire and the cold resolve of a man with nothing to lose.
