Chapter 5 - Blood Never Forgets

The confession hung in the dusty air of the clinic like a toxic mist.
Ethan looked at Chloe as if he were seeing a demon wear his sister’s skin.
The foundation of his entire existence—his reverence for his father’s legacy, his pride in the Whitmore family name—had just collapsed into a cesspool of rot and corruption.
“You knew?” Ethan whispered, his voice cracking with absolute agony.
“You knew what he was doing, and you let Sarah take the blame?”
Chloe let out a cold, sharp laugh that sounded completely unhinged.
“What was I supposed to do, Ethan?” she asked, stepping away from the door and pacing like a caged cat across the linoleum.
“Tell you?”
“Tell the great Ethan Whitmore that your beloved, philanthropic father was creeping into my bedroom every weekend while your mother was dying of cancer in the west wing?”
“You would have called me a liar!”
“You worshipped that old man!”
“You built statues of him in front of three different research hospitals!”
She turned toward me, pointing a manicured finger directly at my chest.
“And then Sarah found out!”
“I started bleeding in the middle of the night, and I was terrified.”
“I didn't want Arthur’s child inside me!”
“I bought those pills from an underground clinic in South Boston because I wanted it out!”
“When the hemorrhaging wouldn't stop, I went to Sarah’s private clinic because she was an OB-GYN and she was family.”
“I begged her on my knees to clean me out and keep it quiet!”
Chloe’s eyes were wide, wild, and entirely devoid of remorse.
“And she did it!”
“She took me into the procedure room, she stopped the bleeding, and she saved my miserable life!”
“But then Arthur found out the next morning.”
Chloe stopped pacing and looked Ethan dead in the eye, a sickening smile curling her lips.
“Your father told me that if I ever breathed a word about who the father was, he would cut me out of the will, throw me onto the street without a single cent, and have Richard Vance manufacture a criminal case against me for grand larceny.”
“He told me to say that Sarah forced the procedure on me to cover up an affair she was having.”
“He told me to say that Sarah took money to terminate a pregnancy without family consent.”
Ethan was trembling violently now, his hands clenching into white-knuckled fists at his sides.
“And you did it,” Ethan whispered.
“You destroyed my wife.”
“You destroyed my son.”
“To save your trust fund?”
“To save my life, you idiot!” Chloe shouted back, her voice bouncing violently off the walls.
“You think Arthur was a gentle old man?”
“He had men who disappeared problems for him!”
“Elena Rostova knew it, that’s why she ran!”
“Richard Vance knew it, that’s why he followed every order Arthur ever wrote!”
“And you, Ethan… you were the easiest puppet of all.”
“All I had to do was cry.”
“All I had to do was look at you with big, frightened eyes and tell you that Sarah had always hated me, that Sarah wanted to destroy the family.”
“And you did the rest.”
“You destroyed her clinic with your own lawyers.”
“You broke her arm on your own stairs.”
“You turned the whole world against her so thoroughly that I didn't even have to lift another finger!”
Ethan looked down at his own hands.
The hands that had performed thousands of delicate administrative decisions, the hands that had physically broken the bone of the woman he once promised to cherish before God and their community.
A low, guttural groan rose from his chest, sounding like a wounded animal dying in a trap.
“My God,” Ethan choked out.
“What have I done?”
“What you always do, Ethan,” I said, my voice cutting through his grief like an ice pick.
“You protected your pride at the expense of everyone who ever loved you.”
I picked up the small silver recorder sitting behind the medicine box on the counter.
The small red light on its corner had been glowing steadily since the moment Ethan pushed my door open.
Chloe’s eyes snapped to the device, the madness instantly freezing on her face.
“What is that?” Chloe demanded, taking a step toward the counter.
“This clinic has a standard digital audio security backup required by state law for rural dispensaries,” I said calmly.
“Every word you just spoke, Chloe, has been uploaded in real time to a secure cloud server managed by the federal prosecutor’s office in Boston.”
Chloe lunged forward with a shriek of raw fury, her fingernails clawing toward the device.
Before she could reach the counter, Ethan moved.
With a speed that surprised even me, his long arm shot out and grabbed Chloe by the wrist, jerking her backward with such force that she stumbled and fell hard onto the clinic floor.
“Don’t touch it,” Ethan roared, his voice shaking with a rage so terrifying that the entire room seemed to vibrate.
Chloe scrambled backward on her elbows, staring up at Ethan in complete disbelief.
“Ethan! I'm your sister!” she screamed.
“You are nothing to me,” Ethan said, his voice dropping into a register of deathly, irreversible hatred.

“You never were.”
