Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Siege

Dawn broke over Lake Michigan in a dreary wash of steel gray and bitter sleet.

By seven in the morning, the thirty-fourth floor of the Vale Tower on Wacker Drive was engulfed in absolute chaos.

Phones on the executive desks were ringing incessantly, their red lights flashing like warning beacons across the trading floor.

Brokers, logistics coordinators, and junior vice presidents were gathered in frantic clusters, clutching tablets that displayed error codes.

The automated financial clearings that moved millions of dollars through the Chicago maritime ports had completely ceased functioning.

The elevator doors chimed, sliding open to reveal Dominic Vale, his silver hair disheveled, his dark coat soaked through.

He had not slept a single second, spending the night pacing the rain-slicked pavement outside Northwestern Memorial before rushing downtown.

The staff parted before him like water before a prow, terrified by the murderous fury etched into his pale, sharp face.

He strode directly toward the corner office that belonged to Lena Pryce, kicking open the frosted glass door with a deafening crash.

Lena was sitting behind her glass-topped desk, an expensive silk scarf draped over her shoulders, calmly sipping an espresso.

Beside her stood two men in gray suits carrying briefcases embossed with the seal of the Moretti Logistics Corporation.

Vincent Moretti was Dominic’s fiercest rival in the Midwest, a man who had fought for decades to seize control of the lakefront docks.

Lena did not flinch as the door splintered against the drywall; she merely raised her porcelain cup and smiled with cool satisfaction.

"You're late for the morning briefing, Dominic," Lena said, her voice smooth, musical, and completely devoid of guilt.

Dominic crossed the room in three strides, slamming both palms down onto the glass desk so hard the surface cracked beneath his weight.

"Where are the transfer codes, Lena?" Dominic growled, his voice a terrifying vibration from deep within his chest.

"Where are the documents you pulled from the Meridian terminal while my wife was in labor?"

Lena did not look intimidated; she set her coffee cup down with deliberate precision and leaned back in her leather chair.

"The documents are currently being processed through the Cook County Clerk’s office, darling," she said softly.

"By noon today, the Calumet terminal and the Michigan rail yards will be the lawful property of the Moretti Group."

"You lied about the federal indictments," Dominic said, realizing the depths of his own blinding arrogance.

"You manufactured those audit files to keep me running to that Meridian condo every night."

"Of course I did," Lena replied, laughing quietly as the two Moretti enforcers stepped forward, their hands resting inside their jackets.

"You were so terrified of Margot finding out that your empire rested on dirty foundation stones that you swallowed every lie I fed you."

"You were so desperate to play the noble protector that you left your pregnant wife alone to sit in my parlor and beg for silence."

"And while you were busy playing hero, I took your digital signature, your private encryption keys, and your company."

Dominic drew his weapon from beneath his coat, pointing the dark muzzle directly between Lena’s mocking eyes.

The two Moretti enforcers immediately drew their own firearms, the sharp clicks of cocked hammers filling the executive suite.

"Shoot me, Dominic," Lena taunted, her hazel eyes glittering with malice.

"Kill me in front of these witnesses and give Margot full custody of your son while you rot in Stateville for the rest of your life."

Before Dominic could squeeze the trigger, the large boardroom monitor on the wall hummed to life with an incoming video transmission.

The screen flashed with the judicial seal of the Chancery Division, followed by the crisp image of Judge Judith Calloway.

Beside Judge Calloway sat Margot Ellery, wrapped in a dark velvet robe, sitting in a wheelchair within a private hospital conference room.

Theo was resting peacefully in a bassinet just beside her, guarded by Rowan Hale and two armed representatives of the Longshoremen’s Union.

The room on the thirty-fourth floor fell dead silent, the enforcers lowering their weapons slightly as the judicial authority manifested.

"Put your guns away, gentlemen," Judge Calloway’s voice rang out through the executive speaker system with absolute clarity.

"This proceeding is being recorded under direct federal administrative oversight."

Lena’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a sudden, sharp frown of confusion as she stared at the screen.

"Your Honor, this is an internal corporate dispute," Lena said quickly, stepping toward the camera mounted on the wall.

"I hold an executed spousal transfer signed by Margot Ellery herself at ten-zero-eight last night."

Margot looked through the lens, her hazel eyes locking onto Lena with the devastating coldness of an executioner.

"The document you executed at ten-zero-eight is entirely void, Miss Pryce," Margot said, her voice steady and ringing with authority.

"Because at nine-thirty last night, thirty-two minutes before my son was born, I pre-emptively transferred all founder authority to a blind trust."

"The encryption key you stole from Dominic’s terminal was a dummy decoy I planted in the system four weeks ago."

Lena’s face drained of color, her gaze darting to her tablet as she frantically tapped the screen.

"Every single asset you attempted to reassign to the Moretti family didn't transfer ownership of our shipping docks," Margot continued.

"It transferred eighty-seven million dollars in uncollateralized subprime liabilities directly onto the Moretti corporate ledger."

Vincent Moretti’s enforcers looked at each other, their eyes wide with sudden terror, their hands pulling away from their weapons.

"You didn't steal our empire, Lena," Margot said softly, her lips curving into a ruthless, triumphant smile.

"You just bought eighty-seven million dollars of my family’s bad debt, and you signed for it with your own personal guarantee."

Dominic slowly lowered his weapon, staring at the monitor in profound shock, realizing his curvy, gentle wife had outplayed them all.
