Chapter 16 - The Cold Cell and the Unspoken Ledger

The Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown Chicago was a concrete monolith designed to swallow human arrogance whole.

Inside visiting booth 4B, the air smelled of industrial bleach, damp concrete, and the stale grease of cafeteria rations.

Vanessa Reed sat behind the reinforced glass partition, wearing an oversized orange jumpsuit that swallowed her once-slender frame.

Her polished French manicure had chipped away, leaving nails chewed down to the quick.

Her expensive blonde highlights were overgrown, revealing dull, dark roots, and her eyes were sunken into bruised hollows of panic.

Across from her sat Samuel Ross’s former junior associate, David Klein, who had only agreed to visit out of professional courtesy before public defense counsel was assigned.

"The federal prosecutor has rejected the third plea deal, Vanessa," Klein said, his voice flat through the plastic telephone receiver.

"They are charging you under the federal racketeering and corporate extortion statutes."

"With the switchboard recordings and the Cayman bank transfers, you are looking at twelve to fifteen years without parole."

Vanessa’s hand trembled so violently that the plastic receiver rattled against the glass.

"Vincent can stop this," she whispered, her voice cracked, desperate, and shrill.

"He can testify that the merger delay was an internal corporate oversight."

"He can tell the grand jury that I was acting within executive scope."

"Have you contacted him?"

"Have you given him my message?"

Klein looked at her with an expression bordering on pity.

"Vincent Moretti severed all communication with Chicago three weeks ago."

"He surrendered his executive credentials, transferred his voting shares into a blind family trust, and vacated his residence."

"The firm’s new crisis board of directors is fully cooperating with the Justice Department."

"They are using your prosecution as a public sacrificial offering to stabilize their institutional stock."

"No," Vanessa sobbed, pressing her forehead against the cold glass.

"He wouldn't do this to me."

"I protected him for three years."

"I kept Claire from draining his energy with her pathetic family demands."

"I was the only one who understood the cost of his ambition."

Klein packed his leather portfolio, snapping the brass buckles shut with a sound like a small hammer.

"You didn't protect him, Vanessa."

"You fed his worst impulses until he destroyed the only thing he actually valued."

"And the grand jury has already issued subpoenas for your personal lockbox in Geneva."

"They found the secondary ledger."

Vanessa's breath seized in her throat, her pupils dilating in sheer terror.

"What ledger?"

"The one documenting the systematic tampering with Mrs. Bennett’s personal correspondence over eighteen months," Klein said, standing up from his metal stool.

"You didn't just reroute her hospital test results."

"You intercepted the final estate notifications from her dying father three years ago."

"You deliberately delayed the emergency power of attorney documents that would have allowed her to see him before he passed in hospice."

A suffocating stillness descended over the booth.

Vanessa stared at the attorney, her lips parting, unable to formulate a defense against her own archived malice.

"The federal prosecutor plans to enter that document into public evidence on Friday," Klein added softly.

"When Vincent Moretti’s legal observers read that record, whatever lingering mercy he might have had will turn to salt."

"May God have mercy on you, Vanessa, because the legal system certainly will not."

Klein turned his back and walked through the heavy security door.

The metal latch engaged with a resounding slam.

Vanessa sank forward against the steel shelf of the booth, clutching the dead telephone receiver to her ear, weeping into the empty air.

The cage she had built for Claire Bennett had closed around her own neck.

And there was no one left on the outside to take her calls.
