Chapter 11 - The Scorpions in the Rubble

The collapse of the European merger sent shockwaves tearing through the Chicago financial district like a tremor through dry glass.
By Wednesday morning, financial dailies across the country ran front-page exposés detailing the sudden judicial freeze placed on Moretti Holdings.
The firm’s stock plummeted twenty-two percent in early trading, triggering automated circuit breakers on the exchange floor.
Board members and institutional stakeholders flooded the executive switchboard with furious demands for an emergency general meeting.
Yet inside the quiet, stone-walled townhouse in the Gold Coast, the noise of the outside world felt millions of miles away.
I woke before sunrise, the sharp throbbing in my ribs gradually settling into a dull, manageable ache.
Arthur’s housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, brought a tray of dry toast, poached eggs, and fresh herbal broth to the guest suite.
Beside the plate lay the morning edition of the legal gazette and a fresh dossier prepared by Marcus Cole.
"Ms. Reed has retained Samuel Ross," Arthur announced, stepping into the suite with a cup of black coffee in hand.
Samuel Ross was known throughout Illinois as the apex predator of criminal defense, a man who specialized in turning disgraced executives into sympathetic victims.
"Ross filed an emergency motion this morning to seal the boardroom audio recording," Arthur continued, sitting in the armchair opposite my bed.
"He claims the switchboard intercept was obtained without Ms. Reed’s explicit consent and constitutes an unlawful wiretap."
"Can he suppress it?" I asked, setting my fork down onto the porcelain plate.
Arthur offered a grim, razor-thin smile.
"In a standard civil dispute, he might have argued wiretap statutes."
"However, your late father established the initial telecommunications infrastructure for Moretti Holdings fifteen years ago."
"Under the original corporate bylaws that Vincent never bothered to modernize, all emergency dispatches routed through the executive switchboard are classified as institutional records subject to mandatory regulatory oversight."
"She recorded herself on company equipment while performing official administrative duties."
"Furthermore, Marcus uncovered something far more damning during his overnight forensic audit of her personal offshore accounts."
Marcus Cole entered the room, carrying a slim leather folder under his arm.
"Three months ago, a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands transferred four hundred thousand dollars into an account under Vanessa Reed’s mother’s maiden name," Marcus said, handing me a bank wire receipt.
"The originating entity traces back to Vanderlin Capital, the European consortium’s primary rival."
I stared at the transaction ledger, the numbers burning into my retinas.
"She wasn't just managing Vincent's schedule," I whispered, the final puzzle piece locking into place.
"She was actively engineering a deliberate delay," Marcus confirmed.
"If the European closing was delayed by even forty-eight hours past the contractual deadline, Vanderlin Capital’s contingency acquisition bid would automatically activate."
"She intended to cash in on the merger's failure while positioning herself as the irreplaceable martyr who stood by Vincent during his marital collapse."
"She didn't just sacrifice our child out of twisted loyalty to Vincent," I said, a wave of cold disgust washing through my veins.
"She did it for a corporate payout."
"Greed is always much simpler than loyalty," Arthur remarked, standing up and adjusting his cuff links.
"Ross does not know we have these bank records yet."
"He believes this is merely an ugly divorce with an ancillary emotional distress tort."
"At two o'clock this afternoon, Judge Sterling is convening an emergency preliminary status conference in chambers."
"Ross intends to portray Ms. Reed as an innocent corporate intermediary caught in the crossfire of our marital hostility."
"And what will we do?" I asked, looking Arthur straight in the eye.
"We will hand the wire transfers directly to the Assistant United States Attorney seated beside us," Arthur replied with absolute finality.

"Vincent believed he built an impregnable fortress of power and control."
"Today, he will watch the viper he nurtured in his own office lead him directly into the ruins."
