Chapter 7 - The Fortress on 4th Avenue

The freezing rain stung my face as I pedaled through the deserted streets of lower Queen Anne toward downtown Seattle.
My hands were numb inside my leather gloves by the time I reached 4th Avenue, where the glass towers of the financial district rose like gray monoliths into the low-hanging winter clouds.
At 5:30 AM, the lobby of the Rainier Tower was empty except for a security guard sipping black coffee behind a curved granite console.
I took the express elevator to the thirty-second floor, where the offices of Sterling, Vance & Croft typically handled white-collar defense and corporate estates.
I didn't go to Evan’s firm.
I went four floors above them, to the offices of Miller, Ross & Sterling, where my personal attorney, Diane Ross, maintained her private practice.
Diane was sixty-two years old, with silver cropped hair and eyes like polished slate.
She had represented my mother during her probate battles fifteen years ago, and she was the only person in Washington State who held a certified master copy of my grandmother’s original trust documents.
When she opened her frosted glass office door in response to my emergency text, she was already wearing her tailored wool suit and holding two thermal mugs of black tea.
"You look like you swam across Puget Sound, Lauren," she said, pulling me inside and locking the deadbolt behind us.
"Sit down, take off that wet coat, and tell me why federal agents are running a warrant on your Queen Anne address."
I didn't answer with words.
I set the waterproof pouch on her mahogany desk and unzipped it.
I laid out the forged affidavits, the LLC incorporation documents, the forged bearer bond assignments, and my phone displaying the photos of Evan’s desk drawers.
Diane put on her reading glasses, pulled her desk lamp down until the bulb illuminated the paper fibers, and examined the signature lines in absolute silence.
For six uninterrupted minutes, the only sound in the office was the rustle of heavy bond paper and the distant rumble of morning commuter buses below.
When she finally looked up, her expression was grim and calculating.
"This isn't just amateur forgery," Diane said, tapping her gold fountain pen against the notary seal.
"Look at this registration stamp from King County."
"The notary who signed off on your power of attorney is Brenda Caldwell."
I frowned, racking my memory.
"Who is Brenda Caldwell?"
"She is the head paralegal for Marcus Vance’s corporate tax group at Morrison & Croft," Diane replied coldly.
"Your husband didn't do this alone in a panicked frenzy."
"This was a coordinated, pre-meditated scheme structured across three different departments to offload their firm's illegal margin calls onto an entity under your sole name."
"Ryan Gallagher wasn't exaggerating when he called you at four in the morning."
"If you had been asleep in that bed when they served the search warrant at dawn, your fingerprints on those files would have made you the prime conspirator."
A wave of cold nausea washed over my chest.
"They planned this while he was smiling in our kitchen, telling me his friends thought I wasn't good enough for him."
"The insults were psychological conditioning, Lauren," Diane explained with chilling clinical precision.
"They wanted you feeling alienated, isolated, and defensive so that when you inevitably pulled away, you wouldn't ask to review our quarterly tax disclosures."
"They needed you to look like a bitter, estranged wife operating a rogue offshore asset fund behind your high-achieving husband's back."
"So what do we do?" I asked, leaning forward, my hands gripping the armrests of the leather chair.
Diane smiled a razor-thin, venomous smile that held no humor.
"We do not file for divorce today, Lauren."
"A civil divorce filing alerts their defense attorneys and triggers an automatic stay on financial disclosures."

"Instead, we walk down the hallway to the Federal Building on 5th Avenue and deliver this pouch directly to the Assistant United States Attorney before Marcus and Nick have time to submit their proffer agreement."
"We turn your husband’s trap into their federal indictment."
