Chapter 9

The camera footage from the laundry room gave me one truth.

The north house gave me another.

Frank had built an entire plan around the assumption that everyone would obey him because they always had.

Guards.

Household staff.

Family elders.

Renata.

Even me, once.

I gathered the three men assigned to the north property.

They looked ashamed.

Good.

“Who gave you orders?”

“Mr. Frank.”

“Did you confirm them with me?”

No.

“Why?”

One man answered honestly.

“Because he was patriarch before you.”

There it was.

Past authority treated as permanent.

“What exactly were you told?”

“To prepare for a temporary family stay.”

“Whose?”

Silence.

“Maisie’s?”

One nodded.

I looked at Frank.

He said nothing.

The guard continued.

“We were told the child might be brought quietly after the council meeting.”

Renata closed her eyes.

“What else?”

“That nobody was to contact you until Frank arrived.”

My jaw tightened.

Isolation first.

Explanation second.

Same pattern as the laundry room.

Same pattern as every controlling family system.

Take away the witness.

Take away the parent.

Then define reality for the child.

I looked at the guards.

“You’re done.”

They nodded.

No argument.

Frank laughed.

“You’ll remove good men because they respected family hierarchy?”

“Yes.”

His face hardened.

“That simple?”

“That simple.”

I looked around.

Respect without verification had almost become kidnapping.

Tradition without accountability had become permission.

I turned toward Renata.

“And you?”

She stared.

“What about me?”

“You helped hurt her.”

Her face fell.

“I thought she stole from me.”

“No.”

“You wanted to.”

Silence.

That hit.

“You needed an excuse.”

I stepped closer.

“And Frank gave you one.”

Renata looked away.

She had not known the larger plan.

But she had enjoyed the smaller cruelty.

May you like

That mattered too.

Not knowing the conspiracy did not erase what she chose when given permission to hurt someone weaker.
