Chapter 9

The silence that settled over the estate after Heloise’s forced departure was profound and absolute. The bright, cinematic daylight outside began to transition into the softer, warmer hues of late afternoon, yet the interior of the house remained bathed in crisp, natural, white light. Aldric stood alone in the grand drawing-room, the heavy crystal glass cool against his palm. He had excised the poison from his home, but the echoes of his daughter's suffering still beat heavily against his heart.
He set the glass down and walked slowly back up the grand mahogany staircase. The heavy presence of his security team was invisible but palpable; the estate was an impenetrable fortress.
Aldric quietly opened the door to the master suite.
Thora was fast asleep in the center of the massive, plush bed. The oversized, fuzzy pink pajamas made her look even smaller than she was. Her fair, rosy face was peaceful, the harsh red mark on her cheek already beginning to fade, though the memory of it would fuel Aldric’s protective rage for the rest of his life.
He walked over to the bed and sat gently on the edge, careful not to wake her. He reached out and lightly stroked her soft, fine hair.
"You will never have to be afraid in this house again, my sweet girl," Aldric whispered into the quiet room. "I will burn the world to ashes before I let anyone make you feel like you don't belong here."
As he sat there, watching his daughter sleep, a soft knock came at the open bedroom door.
Aldric turned his head. Marcus was standing in the hallway, his expression serious.
"What is it?" Aldric asked, keeping his voice low, a deep, resonant hum that commanded attention without waking the child.
"We dropped her off at the Ashford estate," Marcus reported, stepping quietly into the room. "Her father was waiting. He was furious, as expected. But he didn't threaten legal action. He didn't threaten the police."
Aldric’s eyes narrowed, his sharp, movie-star features hardening into a mask of calculated anticipation. "What did he do?"
"He told our drivers to deliver a message to you," Marcus said, crossing his arms over his broad chest. "He said that taking his money was a mistake. He said that he has allies in Chicago who don't care about bank accounts or holding companies. They deal in blood."
A cold, dangerous smile slowly spread across Aldric’s face. The charming, romantic aesthetic vanished entirely, replaced by the apex predator of the criminal underworld.
"He is calling in the Chicago syndicate," Aldric murmured, the realization sparking a dark thrill of absolute violence within him. "He thinks he can outsource his revenge."
"If Chicago gets involved, Boss, this is no longer a domestic dispute," Marcus warned, his American accent tense with the gravity of the situation. "This becomes an all-out syndicate war. They will send hit squads. They will come for the properties, and they will come for you."

Aldric looked down at Thora, sleeping peacefully, entirely unaware of the storm gathering on the horizon. He reached down and gently pulled the thick down comforter higher over her small shoulders, ensuring she was completely safe and warm.
"Let them come," Aldric whispered.
