Chapter 20 - The Midnight Ultimatum

Dawn broke over St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in pale, muted shades of gray and lavender.

The hospital room was completely silent except for the rhythmic, comforting beeping of the neonatal vital monitors.

Hope’s cheeks had regained their rosy, natural warmth, her tiny chest moving in deep, restful breaths.

Beside her, Leo slept with his fingers still loosely intertwined with his twin sister’s through the crib bars.

James was fast asleep in the armchair, his bruised face resting against his chest, exhausted by forty-eight hours of battle.

Liam had curled up on the small visitor sofa, his sneakers dangling off the edge, breathing softly under his jacket.

I stood by the window, watching the morning mist rise off the hospital courtyard, holding a lukewarm cup of black coffee.

For the first time in months, the crushing weight in my chest had loosened its grip.

The county prosecutor had called twenty minutes earlier to confirm Eleanor Vance had been denied bail.

Arthur Pendelton had withdrawn as her counsel after federal fraud investigators raided her Manhattan corporate offices.

Every legal barrier had fallen.

Both birth certificates were currently being reissued by the Department of Health with James and my names as parents.

I took a slow, deep breath, finally letting the tears of pure relief wash over my tired face.

Then, the screen of the burner phone Evelyn Cross had left on the bedside table lit up silently.

It didn't ring.

It buzzed once with a single incoming multimedia text message from an unregistered, masked number.

I frowned, setting my coffee cup down on the sill, and walked quietly over to the nightstand so I wouldn't wake James.

I picked up the black plastic phone and tapped the screen to view the message.

The message was an audio file attached to an image that made the blood in my veins turn instantly to pure ice.

The image was a high-resolution photograph taken from the nursery doorway not more than ten minutes ago.

It showed the back of my head as I stood by the window, James asleep in the chair, and Liam on the sofa.

Someone was inside the room with us, watching our every move from the shadowed corridor.

My hands began to shake so violently that I almost dropped the phone against the linoleum floor.

I hit play on the audio file, pressing the tiny speaker tightly against my ear.

A distorted, mechanically disguised voice whispered through the static, cold and calculating.

"Eleanor Vance was only the buyer, Claire."

"She paid forty million dollars to our private syndicate to genetically engineer those two children from that specific bloodline."

"Eleanor thought she was playing a family inheritance game, but she was merely our private funding mechanism."

"You took the boy from Greenfield Manor, but you took something far more valuable embedded in his bone marrow."

"A proprietary synthetic sequence developed under a classified Department of Defense contract."

The voice paused, the sound of slow, heavy footsteps creaking over floorboards echoing on the recording.

"You have twenty-four hours to bring both children to the freight docks at Pier 42."

"If you go to the police, if you speak to Judge Hastings, or if you attempt to leave this hospital with our assets..."

"We will not bother taking the twins back."

"We will simply execute your three older sons while they sleep in their beds at home."

The recording ended with a sharp, mechanical click.

At that exact moment, the nursery door clicked softly open, and the shadow of a tall figure fell across the cribs.
