Chapter 7 - The Fifth Avenue Trap

Down on Fifth Avenue, the rain was coming down in sheets, turning the asphalt into a black mirror that caught the flashing red and blue lights of an approaching police cruiser.
Sophie Dubois stood beneath the stone overhang of the St. Regis entrance, her black waitress jacket soaked through to her shoulders. Her breath hitched in the cold air, rising in small, frantic clouds. She held her phone tightly in her hand, the screen glowing with a single active call: Alessandro.
"Sophie, get back inside the vestibule," Alessandro’s voice barked through the speaker, laced with a raw panic she had never heard before. "Viktor has an extraction team on the street. Move, now!"
"No," Sophie said into the phone, her eyes locked on the black armored van idling fifty yards away across the lane. "You think I came all the way here to hide in a hotel lobby while you settle my family's debts? My mother didn't die for a footnote, Alessandro. And I am not running anymore."
"Sophie, this isn't a negotiation—"
The call abruptly cut out as static drowned out his voice.
Across the street, the side door of the black armored van slid open with a sharp, mechanical clatter. Two men in heavy tactical gear stepped out onto the slick pavement, their automatic rifles held at low-ready as they began to cross the avenue directly toward her. Pedestrians on the sidewalk screamed and scattered in every direction like panicked birds.
Sophie didn't run.
Instead, she reached into the deep pocket of her waitress trousers and pulled out the heavy brass key her father had tossed across table twelve. The metal was cold against her palm, etched with the jagged cryptographic markings that had cost her family seventeen years of exile.
"Looking for this?" she called out, her voice carrying clearly across the wet pavement over the hum of city traffic.
The lead operative froze mid-step, his tactical helmet turning toward her. He raised his rifle, sighting down the barrel straight at her chest. "Hand it over, girl. Last warning."
Before he could pull the trigger, the scream of tires tearing against wet asphalt echoed down Fifth Avenue.
A matte-black Mercedes SUV came barreling around the corner from 55th Street, its high-beams cutting through the rain like searchlights. Without slowing down, the vehicle jumped the curb, sheared clean through a municipal parking meter, and slammed directly into the side of the armored van with a deafening crash of buckling metal and shattering glass.
The impact threw both tactical operatives off balance.
The door of the Mercedes flew open before it had even come to a complete stop. Alessandro Moretti vaulted out of the driver's seat, his Sig Sauer barking twice in rapid succession. Both operatives went down, their rifles clattering into the gutter.
Alessandro didn't pause. He grabbed Sophie by the arm, hauling her toward the open passenger door of the SUV with furious urgency. "Get in! Now!"

"Where's my father?" Sophie demanded, resisting his pull as she scanned the shattered lobby doors of the hotel behind them.
"He stayed behind to finish it," Alessandro shouted over the wailing sirens of approaching police cruisers. "If we don't move right now, the entire NYPD will surround this block before we can reach the docks."
