Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary of Shadows and the Fragile Breath of the Damned

The black SUV glided through the iron gates of the Moretti estate,

a fortress of limestone and secrets hidden deep within the woods of the Hudson Valley.

I leaned my head against the cool leather of the seat,

feeling the rhythmic thrum of the engine beneath me.

Every bump in the road was a jagged reminder of the thirty stripes on my back,

a symphony of pain that refused to be ignored.

Dominic sat beside me,

his presence a silent,

suffocating blanket of protection.

He didn't speak,

but I could feel the heat of his fury radiating off him in waves.

We reached the front entrance,

where a private medical team was already waiting,

their white coats a stark contrast to the tactical black of the Moretti guards.

They moved with clinical efficiency,

helping me out of the car and onto a stretcher.

"Gently,"

Matteo barked,

his voice echoing off the stone walls of the foyer.

"If any of you cause her more pain,

you’ll answer to me."

The doctors nodded frantically,

their faces pale under the bright LED lights.

I was whisked away to a private wing of the house,

a room that had been prepared for me in the hour since I made the call.

The air here smelled of antiseptic and lavender,

a strange combination that made my stomach churn.

As they laid me facedown on the medical bed,

the reality of the night finally began to settle into my bones.

The adrenaline was fading,

leaving behind a cold,

hollow exhaustion.

A nurse began to cut away the remnants of my ruined dress,

her hands trembling as she saw the extent of the damage.

"My God,"

she whispered,

so softly she probably thought I couldn't hear.

I closed my eyes,

biting my lip to keep from screaming as the fabric was peeled away from the dried blood.

The thirtieth strike had been the deepest,

a jagged canyon across my shoulder blades.

I heard the door open,

and the heavy tread of boots told me it was Luca.

"The anesthetic is ready,

Elena,"

he said,

his voice unusually soft.

"You don't have to feel this part."

"No,"

I managed to say,

my voice rasping against the back of my throat.

"I want to stay awake."

"Why?"

Luca asked,

coming to stand by my head.

"Because I need to remember,"

I told him,

opening my eyes to look at the cold,

hard floor.

"I need to remember exactly what he felt like."

Luca stared at me for a long moment,

his analytical mind probably cataloging my psychological state.

He was the defense attorney,

the one who saw the worst of humanity every day in court.

But I could see the cracks in his professional mask.

He reached out and smoothed a stray hair from my forehead.

"He will never touch you again,

Elena,"

Luca promised.

"I am personally drafting the civil suit that will strip him of his skin if the criminal charges don't do it first."

As the doctors began to clean the wounds,

the room became a blur of sharp stings and the smell of ozone.

I gripped the sides of the bed,

my knuckles turning white.

Outside the room,

I could hear the voices of my other brothers.

Gabriel was likely on a conference call,

liquidating the last of the Cole assets.

Nico was probably digging into the pasts of every guest who stood by and watched.

And Dominic...

Dominic was likely sitting in the dark,

cleaning a weapon he didn't need to use yet.

The pain was a physical weight,

pulling me down into a dark,

dreamless sea.

But before I drifted off,

I made a silent vow.

The woman who entered the Cole mansion tonight was dead.

May you like

The woman who woke up tomorrow would be a Moretti through and through.

And the world would learn to fear the name again.
