Chapter 1 - The Shadow of the Moretti

The air in the grand ballroom of the Cole estate was thick with the scent of expensive perfume,

stale champagne,

and the metallic tang of my own blood.

The thirtieth strike had left a jagged trail of fire across my back,

a map of agony that throbbed with every shallow breath I took.

Adrian Cole stood before me,

his chest heaving with a mixture of exertion and sick,

perverted triumph.

He adjusted his silk cuffs,

looking down at me as if I were a stain on his polished floor.

Beside him,

Vanessa Hart smoothed her ruined silver dress,

her eyes gleaming with a malice that the guests chose to ignore.

Fifty of the city’s elite watched,

their faces masks of indifference or masked curiosity,

as I hung from the ceiling beam like a broken doll.

But as the gates slammed shut in the distance,

the sound echoing like a gunshot through the silent valley,

the atmosphere shifted instantly.

The silence was no longer one of submission,

but one of impending doom.

The black SUVs did not just drive;

they invaded.

They tore across the manicured lawn,

shredding the expensive sod that Adrian took so much pride in.

I felt the vibration in the floorboards,

a low rumble that traveled up through my bruised feet and into my very soul.

Dominic was here.

And when Dominic arrived,

the world usually stopped turning until he decided otherwise.

The employee who had cut me down hovered nearby,

trembling with a fear that was far more rational than Adrian’s arrogance.

I leaned against the mahogany table,

using it as a crutch to keep my spine straight.

The pain was a white noise in my head,

but my mind had never been clearer.

I watched Adrian’s face,

watching as the mask of the powerful billionaire began to crack.

He looked at the windows,

where the headlights of the SUVs blinded the guests,

turning the ballroom into a stage of shifting shadows.

"Who is that?"

Margaret Cole hissed,

clutching her pearls so tightly they threatened to snap.

"Adrian,

who is at our gate?"

Adrian didn't answer.

He couldn't.

He was watching the front doors of the mansion,

which were currently being kicked off their hinges with a violence that shook the entire structure.

The sound of splintering wood was the most beautiful music I had ever heard.

First came the men in tactical gear,

silent and efficient,

fanning out to cover every exit with the precision of a professional army.

And then,

walking through the debris of the grand entrance,

came my brothers.

Dominic led the way,

his long black overcoat billowing behind him like the wings of an avenging angel.

His face was a mask of cold stone,

his eyes scanning the room until they landed on me.

I saw the moment he noticed the blood on my dress.

I saw the moment his pupils dilated with a rage so ancient and deep it could swallow the world.

Behind him,

Matteo and Luca walked in step,

their expressions mirroring the lethal calm of their older brother.

Gabriel and Nico followed,

already looking at their phones,

likely dismantling the Cole financial empire before they even reached the center of the room.

The guests shrank back,

creating a wide path for the Moretti brothers.

"Elena,"

Dominic said,

his voice a low growl that vibrated in my chest.

He didn't look at Adrian.

He didn't look at the mistress.

He only looked at the marks on my wrists.

"I'm here,

Dominic,"

I whispered,

and for the first time that night,

my voice didn't shake.

The power in the room had shifted so violently that the very air seemed to thin.

The Coles were no longer the hosts;

May you like

they were the prey.

And the hunt had just begun.
