Chapter 10 - The Return of the Reaper

Dawn was breaking over the horizon,

painting the sky in bruised shades of purple and sickly orange,

when the massive iron gates of Fairhaven were pushed open by a fleet of armored black SUVs.

The tires crunched over the shattered glass and debris littering the driveway,

the vehicles forming a tight,

defensive perimeter around the main entrance of the damaged estate.

Julian Cavanaugh stepped out of the lead vehicle,

wearing a tailored black suit that looked completely immaculate,

his expression unreadable,

but the air around him crackled with terrifying,

lethal energy.

He surveyed the bullet holes in the stone walls,

the bloodstains on the marble steps,

and the exhausted,

battered faces of his four sons waiting for him in the grand foyer.

Asher stepped forward,

his chin held high,

prepared to deliver the report of the siege,

prepared to explain how we survived the impossible attack.

“Donatello Romano sent a kill squad,”

Asher stated,

his voice hoarse from yelling and smoke,

“They had our alarm codes,

father,

someone on the inside sold us out.”

Julian did not look surprised,

he didn’t even blink,

his cold eyes simply swept past Asher,

past Ezra leaning heavily on his shotgun,

past Silas shivering in the corner,

and landed directly on the small woman standing near the kitchen doors.

Eleanor met his gaze without an ounce of fear,

her posture straight,

her face a mask of polite indifference,

acting as if she hadn’t just slaughtered half a dozen men the night before.

“I see you earned your keep last night,

Miss Hargrove,”

Julian said,

his deep voice rumbling through the silent,

ruined hallway,

sending shivers down my spine.

“I simply protected the assets of this household,

Mr. Cavanaugh,”

Eleanor replied smoothly,

giving him a very slight,

respectful nod,

“As is my duty as your employee.”

Asher spun around,

staring at our father in absolute disbelief,

his mind struggling to process the interaction happening before him.

“You knew?”

Asher demanded,

his voice rising in anger,

betrayal flashing in his gray eyes,

“You knew she was a highly trained operative,

and you let us treat her like a maid?”

Julian unbuttoned his suit jacket,

stepping further into the ruined foyer,

his massive presence dominating the room,

demanding absolute silence and submission.

“Eleanor Hargrove does not exist,”

Julian stated coldly,

looking at us with a mixture of disappointment and dark pride,

“The woman standing in our kitchen is the last surviving member of the Phantom Syndicate,

a legendary group of assassins wiped out by international agencies three years ago.”

My breath hitched in my throat,

my eyes wide as I stared at the woman who had baked us cookies,

bandaged our wounds,

and listened to our teenage complaints.

“I found her bleeding out in an alley in Prague,”

Julian continued,

his voice devoid of any warmth,

“I offered her a new identity,

a safe haven,

and in return,

she swore an oath to protect my bloodline with her life.”

Eleanor didn’t deny it,

she simply stood there,

the ghost of a deadly assassin hiding behind the facade of a gentle housekeeper.

“Why the kitchen?”

I asked softly,

my voice trembling,

unable to reconcile the monster my father described with the woman who held the umbrella over my head in the rain.

Eleanor finally turned to look at me,

and for the first time,

I saw a flicker of genuine sadness,

a deeply buried pain shining in her dark,

haunted eyes.

“Because the kitchen is the heart of a home,”

she answered quietly,

her voice barely above a whisper,

carrying the weight of a thousand regrets,

“And I wanted to remember what it felt like to have a family,

even if it was a broken one.”

The silence that followed was heavy,

suffocating,

the reality of our entire existence shifting and changing on its axis.

My father turned his icy gaze back to his sons,

his jaw set,

his eyes burning with the promise of an incoming war that would drown the city in blood.

“The Romanos have made their move,”

Julian announced,

his voice ringing like a funeral bell,

“And now,

May you like

with the Phantom at our side,

we will erase them from the face of the earth.”
