Chapter 17 - The Poisoned Apple of Vengeance

The sheer,
audacious arrogance of Lucas Sterling’s financial assault was almost,
in a very twisted,
darkly amusing way,
worthy of a brief,
fleeting moment of genuine professional respect.
He had not spent the last six years crying over his ruined mother,
he had not wasted his massive,
generously funded trust account on foolish,
reckless teenage indulgences like expensive sports cars or wild,
extravagant European vacations.
Instead,
he had clearly,
obsessively dedicated every single waking moment of his miserable,
bitter life to studying the intricate,
ruthless mechanics of the global financial markets.
He had used my money to purchase a brilliant,
ivy-league education,
surrounding himself with aggressive,
morally bankrupt financial mercenaries,
building a shadow hedge fund designed with one singular,
obsessive purpose.
To completely,
utterly destroy Vanguard Pinnacle Holdings,
and by extension,
to destroy the woman who had condemned his mother to a rotting,
concrete prison cell and driven his biological father to absolute,
suicidal despair.
For three long,
exhausting weeks,
the financial markets were an absolute,
chaotic bloodbath,
a brutal,
unforgiving war fought not with bullets and bombs,
but with devastating,
multi-million dollar algorithms,
ruthless media smear campaigns,
and aggressive,
predatory short-selling tactics.
Lucas had managed to secretly,
quietly buy up massive amounts of debt from our primary,
essential supply chain vendors,
threatening to instantly,
catastrophically bankrupt them if they did not immediately halt all vital shipments to Vanguard’s tech manufacturing plants.
The sudden,
artificially created supply chain crisis caused our subsidiary’s stock to plummet violently,
wiping out hundreds of millions of dollars in corporate valuation in a matter of hours,
causing absolute,
blinding panic among our minority shareholders.
Ethan was pacing furiously back and forth across the thick,
plush Persian rug in my office,
his cell phone pressed tightly to his ear,
screaming brutal,
unforgiving orders at our frantic,
sweating team of elite corporate lawyers and crisis management publicists.
"I want injunctions filed in every single federal jurisdiction by midnight!" Ethan roared into the phone,
his face flushed with a terrifying,
volcanic rage that made even his most hardened executives tremble in fear.
"Freeze their offshore holding accounts,
subpoena every single communication log from their shell companies,
and if that corrupt,
bribed judge in Delaware refuses to sign the order,
you find me the specific,
dirty leverage I need to utterly destroy his miserable political career by morning!"
He ended the call,
tossing the expensive,
custom-made phone onto the leather sofa with a heavy,
frustrated sigh,
running his hands through his perfectly styled,
dark hair.
"He is bleeding us,
Mother," Ethan admitted,
his voice lowering into a dangerous,
gravelly growl,
staring out the rain-streaked window at the sprawling,
grey city below.
"He is willing to take massive,
suicidal losses on his own capital just to inflict maximum,
unrecoverable damage on our infrastructure,
fighting like a rabid,
cornered dog with absolutely nothing left to lose."
I sat quietly in my high-backed leather chair,
my posture perfect,
my expression completely,
terrifyingly serene,
as I carefully reviewed a stack of highly classified,
illegally obtained bank records detailing Lucas’s personal,
vulnerable financial leverage.
"A rabid dog is only dangerous,
Ethan,
when you mistakenly,
foolishly step into the limited,
confined radius of its heavy,
iron chain," I murmured,
signing a massive,
nine-figure authorization document with a smooth,
elegant stroke of my gold fountain pen.
"Lucas believes he is fighting a traditional,
honorable corporate war,
using numbers,
stocks,
and aggressive leverage to try and force our massive empire into a desperate,
humiliating submission."
I stood up,
smoothing the fabric of my tailored,
charcoal-grey designer dress,
walking slowly,
deliberately across the spacious room to stand beside my brilliant,
furious son.
"But we do not fight honorable,
traditional wars,
do we,
Ethan?" I asked softly,
looking at the reflection of our powerful,
untouchable forms in the cold,
dark glass of the window.
"We fight in the dark,
we fight in the psychological shadows,
and we destroy the fundamental,
fragile soul of the enemy long before we ever bother to empty their pathetic,
insignificant bank accounts."
Ethan looked at me,
the burning,
chaotic anger in his eyes slowly cooling,
hardening into a sharp,
lethal spear of pure,
calculated malice.
"What is the master plan,
Mother?" he asked,
a dark,
anticipatory smile slowly spreading across his handsome face.
"We are going to give the arrogant,
delusional bastard exactly what he desperately,
obsessively wants," I declared,
turning my back on the window,
walking back to the absolute center of my grand,
impenetrable fortress.
"We are going to show weakness,
we are going to purposefully,
visibly bleed in the public markets,
and we are going to invite him to walk right through the heavily fortified front doors of this very tower."
I picked up my teacup,
taking one final,
satisfying sip of the cold,
bitter liquid.
"And once he is inside our walls,
believing he is the triumphant,
unbeatable conqueror,
I am going to shatter his fragile,
May you like
miserable reality so completely that he will beg me for the sweet,
merciful release of death."
