Chapter 8 - THE CONFRONTATION

The night air suddenly felt freezing.

"What do you mean he isn't in the basement?" Luca growled into the phone.

"Marco must have tipped him off before you got down there," Roberto's voice crackled. "He slipped out. Luca... he's in the garage. He's trying to take Isabella's security car."

Luca hung up the phone. He looked at me, his eyes blazing. "Get back to the panic room. Now."

He sprinted toward the massive multi-car garage at the edge of the property. I didn't listen to him. I couldn't. I ran after him.

We burst through the side doors of the garage just in time to see the taillights of the armored Mercedes SUV roar to life. Arturo Bellini was behind the wheel. He wasn't just trying to escape; he was trying to take the vehicle equipped with the highest security clearances—the one used to transport Isabella.

Luca didn't hesitate. He raised his weapon and fired two precise shots.

The sound was deafening in the enclosed space.

Both rear tires of the Mercedes blew out simultaneously. The heavy SUV swerved, crashing hard into a concrete support pillar. The airbags deployed with a loud pop.

Luca moved forward, holstering his weapon. He yanked the driver's side door open and dragged a stunned, bleeding Arturo out onto the concrete floor.

Arturo coughed, holding his ribs. He looked up at Luca, a pathetic sneer on his face. "You think this changes anything? My syndicate partners will ruin you, Luca. They want your shipping lines."

"Your syndicate partners," Luca said, his voice eerily calm, "called me twenty minutes ago when I sent them the pawn ticket and Marco's confession. They don't do business with men who steal from their own families to pay their debts. You are cut off, Arturo. You have nothing."

Arturo's face fell. The arrogant patriarch was gone, replaced by a terrified, broken old man.

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second.

Luca leaned down, grabbing Arturo by the lapels of his ruined suit. "You took my wife. You tried to break my daughter. You will spend the rest of your pathetic life in a cage, knowing that the Moretti name will erase the Bellini name from this city forever."

He dropped Arturo onto the ground in disgust just as the flashing red and blue lights of the Chicago PD swept across the garage windows.

Luca turned to me, standing trembling by the doorway. The harsh lines of his face softened slightly.

"I told you to go to the panic room," he said, though there was no anger in his voice.

"I couldn't let you do this alone," I said softly.

Luca looked at me for a long moment. He saw a twenty-five-year-old maid in a stained apron, but the respect in his eyes was profound.

"You didn't," he said gently. "Come on. Let's go tell my daughter the monsters are gone."

We walked back into the main house just as the police swarmed the property. Marco and Sarah were dragged out in handcuffs. Arturo was loaded into an ambulance under heavy guard.

We went to the library. Luca tapped the code on the keypad, and the heavy steel door slid open.

Isabella flew out of the room, crashing into her father's legs.

Luca picked her up, burying his face in her dark curls. "It's over, Bella," he whispered, tears finally slipping down the hardened mafia boss's cheeks. "They can't hurt us anymore. The truth is out."

Isabella pulled back and looked at him, then she reached out a small hand toward me.

"Emily helped," she said proudly.

Luca looked at me over his daughter's shoulder. "I know she did."

Roberto stepped out of the panic room, placing a hand on Luca's shoulder. The two men, bound by tragedy and a shared love for the family they had left, shared a silent nod of understanding.

But as the adrenaline began to fade, a wave of reality crashed over me. The police would want statements. The estate was a crime scene. And I was just a housekeeper who had gotten entirely too involved.

I looked at Luca. "I should go pack my things. The police will want to talk to me, and then I..."

Luca frowned, lowering Isabella slightly. "Pack your things? Where exactly do you think you're going?"
