Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Stairwell

The midnight bell from the nearby parish church had just faded into the stormy night when the hospital floor went dead.

It was not a gradual dimming of lights, but a violent, instantaneous cut that plunged the private pavilion into pitch darkness.

Inside room 504, the life-support equipment gave a shrill warning beep before switching over to their low-frequency backup batteries.

Elena sat bolt upright in bed, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

The faint green glow of the fetal monitor painted long, monstrous shadows across the walls of the room.

Outside in the hallway, the sound of heavy scuffling broke out, followed by the dull, sickening thud of a body hitting linoleum.

Elena reached down with trembling fingers, pulling the IV needle from the back of her hand with a sharp wince of pain.

A thin trickle of dark crimson ran down her knuckles, but she ignored it, grabbing the small brass key from underneath her pillow.

She slipped out of the high hospital bed, her bare feet hitting the cold tiles like ice.

The door handle turned slowly, without a sound.

Elena backed away toward the bathroom, her eyes searching the gloom for any heavy object she could use as a weapon.

The door swung open, revealing the massive silhouette of a man dressed entirely in dark tactical gear, carrying a suppressed pistol.

The red laser sight mounted beneath his barrel cut through the darkness, painting a steady crimson dot directly onto the center of her chest.

"Mrs. Moretti," a voice whispered from behind a Kevlar mask, cold and devoid of any human empathy.

"Mr. Sterling sends his warmest regards to the future of the Moretti bloodline."

Before the man could tighten his index finger on the trigger, a pair of leather-gloved hands reached out from the hallway darkness behind him.

An arm locked around the shooter’s throat in a vicious, bone-cracking chokehold, while another hand seized the barrel of the suppressed pistol, forcing it upward toward the ceiling.

A muted pop sounded, and plaster rained down from the ceiling directly above Elena's head.

Dante Moretti stepped into the doorway, his eyes burning with a psychotic, terrifying fury that seemed to illuminate the room on its own.

With a sickening snap, Dante twisted his shoulders, driving the intruder’s skull into the steel doorframe with enough force to shatter the bone.

The masked man slumped to the floor like a sack of wet salt, unmoving, his weapon clattering harmlessly against the baseboard.

Dante stood over the unconscious body, breathing heavily, his white shirt stained with engine grease and fresh rain.

He holstered a compact Glock into his waistband and looked up at his wife.

"You need to leave with me right now, Elena," he said, stepping carefully over the downed assassin.

Elena backed into the corner of the room until her spine met the cold ceramic tile of the bathroom wall.

"Don't touch me," she said, her voice shaking violently as she held up her bleeding hand.

"You brought these killers into our lives, Dante, you invited them to our breakfast table!"

"I know what I did, Elena," Dante answered, stopping four feet away from her and raising his hands to show they were empty.

"I know every sin I have committed against you, and I will answer for every single one of them on my knees if you want me to."

"But right now, Vanessa’s father has mobilized three hit squads across the borough."

"They realized the doctor found the poison in your blood, and they cannot allow you to testify before the grand jury tomorrow morning."

"Grand jury?" Elena repeated, her voice cracking with exhaustion.

"What grand jury?"

Dante stepped closer, his face tightening with genuine, unmasked agony.

"Julian didn't die because of an old mafia blood feud, Elena."

"Julian was executed because he found the shipping manifests showing Sterling was moving illegal munitions through my ports to set me up for life imprisonment."

"I brought Vanessa close because I needed her access codes to her father’s personal servers to prove my innocence and avenge my brother."

"I thought if I made her believe I had discarded you, if I made her believe you were broken and harmless, they would leave you out of the crossfire."

Elena stared at him through the gloom, feeling a horrifying mixture of rage and sorrow tearing her soul apart.

"You let them starve me, Dante!" she screamed, the sound echoing through the dead hospital wing.

"You let that woman slap me across the face in the pantry for dropping a glass of water!"

"You let your staff treat me like an animal while you played the great chess master!"

"And you never once thought to ask me if I was carrying the life we prayed for in that Boston chapel!"

Dante’s knees hit the linoleum floor with a heavy, hollow thud.

The king of New York’s underworld, the man who had ordered men buried alive without blinking, knelt before his discarded wife in a ruined hospital room.

His hands rested flat on the floorboards, his head bowed until his forehead almost touched the hem of her hospital gown.

"I didn't know," he choked out, his shoulders shaking with the first genuine tears he had shed since his brother was lowered into the earth.

"May God rip out my throat if I ever knew about the child, Elena."

"I thought you hated me for Julian's death, I thought you were pulling away from me because you saw the blood on my hands."

"I am a blind, stupid, arrogant monster who destroyed the only clean thing in his miserable life."

"Kill me if you must, Elena, but let me get you and my son out of this building alive first."

The emergency siren began to wail down on the street level, followed by the screech of heavy tires tearing into the ambulance bay.

Footsteps were pounding up the north fire escape stairs, multiple pairs of tactical boots moving with military precision.

Elena looked down at the back of Dante’s bowed head, the man who had broken her heart into a thousand jagged pieces.

She reached down and touched the small brass key hidden in the pocket of her gown.

"Get up, Dante," she said coldly, her voice devoid of both forgiveness and fear.

"If we are going to survive tonight, you are going to take me back to that estate."

"There is something buried in your cellar that will burn the Sterling empire to the ground, and I am the only one who knows how to open it."
