Chapter 9 - The Bloodline Audit and the Paternity Trap

Three days after the arrest of Grant Ashford,
a secondary bomb detonated within the legal proceedings.
I was sitting in Carter Vance’s corner office,
reviewing the final corporate restructuring documents for Ashford-Vane Global,
when Marcus Reynolds walked in carrying a sealed white envelope marked with the red seal of New York Forensic Genetics Laboratory.
“What is that,
Marcus?”
Carter asked,
looking up from his desk.
Marcus placed the envelope directly in front of me on the table.
“As part of Piper Vale’s civil petition for child support from Grant’s frozen estate,”
Marcus explained,
“the family court ordered an expedited DNA paternity test.”
“Grant’s court-appointed lawyer demanded it,
hoping to secure court-ordered trust funds for the child to pay off Piper’s medical debts.”
I looked at the sealed envelope.
“And?”
I asked quietly.
“The results arrived twenty minutes ago,”
Marcus said,
a strange,
almost ironic smile touching his lips.
“Read it yourself,
Vivienne.”
I picked up a gold letter opener,
sliced the top of the envelope,
and pulled out the official laboratory report.
My eyes scanned down the scientific jargon,
the genetic locus markers,
and the statistical probability calculations,
until they reached the final conclusion at the bottom of the page:
PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 0.00%.
EXCLUSION OF GRANT ASHFORD AS THE BIOLOGICAL FATHER.
I stared at the document for a moment,
a slow shock washing over me,
followed by an overwhelming sense of dark amusement.
“He isn’t the father,”
I said aloud,
looking up at Carter.
Carter blinked in absolute disbelief,
then burst into a loud,
booming laugh that echoed off his office walls.
“You’re telling me that Grant ruined his career...”
“forfeited his multi-million dollar life...”
“committed federal corporate crimes...”
“and went to prison for a baby that isn’t even his?”
“Who is the biological father?”
I asked Marcus.
Marcus flipped to the second page of the attachment,
which contained a cross-reference report from the federal database.
“The genetic markers matched a secondary sample seized during the Miami raid on Vance Holdings,”
Marcus said.
“The biological father is none other than Victor Vale.”
“Her own brother?”
Carter asked,
his eyes widening in horror.
“Step-brother,”
Marcus clarified quickly.
“Victor and Piper were step-siblings through their parents' second marriage.”
“They have been running corporate blackmail and honey-trap schemes together across Florida and New York for five years.”
“Piper became pregnant by Victor six months ago.”
“Realizing that a child by her step-brother was worthless,
they targeted Grant Ashford.”
“They seduced him,
convinced him the baby was his,
and used the pregnancy as leverage to force him into stealing fourteen million dollars from your family trust.”
The magnitude of the irony was staggering.
Grant had believed he was a mastermind.
He had believed he was playing me,
cheating on me,
and building a secret second empire with a younger,
devoted mistress.
In reality,
he was the ultimate fool.
A gullible,
gullible mark trapped in a sophisticated honey-trap set by a pair of career swindlers.
“Does Grant know yet?”
I asked,
folding the report neatly back into its envelope.
“The family court attorney is delivering the document to him at MCC holding facility as we speak,”
Marcus replied.
“And Piper?”
“Piper is currently being detained at the hospital by NYPD detectives,”
Marcus added.
“She has been formally charged as a co-conspirator in the Vance Holdings wire fraud case.”
“Since the baby is not an Ashford heir,
her petition for estate access was dismissed with prejudice ten minutes ago.”
“She has no money,
no insurance,
no legal trust,
and her brother is facing fifteen years in prison.”
I stood up from my chair,
feeling a clean,
absolute sense of closure settling over my heart.
The deception was total.
The victory was complete.
Every single person who had conspired to steal from my family,
who had treated my name with disrespect,
had destroyed themselves from the inside out.
“Carter,”
I said,
turning to my legal counsel.
