Chapter 3 - The Hospital Confrontation

By mid-afternoon,

the atmosphere in my hospital room had shifted from quiet recovery to an active battleground.

Attorney Vance was sitting at the corner desk,

typing rapidly on her laptop as she prepared emergency legal motions.

Colonel Carter remained posted near the doorway,

his sharp gaze sweeping the corridor every time someone passed by.

Suddenly,

a loud,

commotion echoed down the hall.

"You cannot restrict my access to my wife!"

Daniel’s voice roared,

growing louder with every second.

"She is emotionally unstable,"

"and she has kidnapped my daughter!"

I gripped the bedsheets,

my body instantly going rigid with anxiety.

Lily shrank back into Sarah’s arms,

her tiny body shaking.

"Stay behind me,

Sarah,"

I said,

trying to remain calm for my daughter's sake.

The room door was slammed open,

and Daniel burst in,

accompanied by two uniformed police officers and a woman wearing a Child Protective Services badge.

Patricia followed right behind them,

wearing an expression of smug victory.

"There she is!"

Patricia announced loudly,

pointing a manicured finger at me.

"Officers,

look at her!"

"She dragged that poor child into an ICU ward just to gain sympathy!"

"Sir,"

one of the police officers said,

stepping forward cautiously.

"We received a report from the child’s father that the mother is unfit,"

"and currently suffering from severe psychological impairment."

Attorney Vance stood up smoothly from her desk,

stepping between the officers and my bed.

"Officer,

my name is Clara Vance,"

she said,

flashing her legal bar card.

"I am the legal representation for Mrs. Clara Vance."

"This claims are completely false,"

"and this father is currently in violation of an active judicial stay ordered by Judge Richard Hanley yesterday morning."

The CPS worker stepped forward,

holding a clipboard.

"We received an urgent referral alleging that the mother suffered an acute psychotic break in open court,"

"and that the child is in immediate danger."

"A psychotic break?"

Colonel Carter’s voice echoed like thunder through the room.

He stepped into the space between the CPS worker and Daniel,

his commanding stature instantly taking control of the scene.

"I am Colonel Aaron Carter,

Chief Medical Officer of the regional military command,"

he stated with cold,

absolute precision.

"I was present in Judge Hanley’s courtroom."

"Mrs. Vance did not have a psychotic break."

"She suffered a massive,

life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia caused by complete heart block."

"Her heart rate dropped to thirty-six beats per minute."

"If I had not performed immediate triage,"

"she could have suffered catastrophic brain injury or sudden cardiac death."

The police officers exchanged a shocked look,

turning their eyes toward Daniel.

"Is this true,

sir?"

the primary officer asked Daniel.

"You claimed in your report that she faked a panic attack."

"She did fake it!"

Daniel yelled,

his face turning an ugly shade of red.

"She’s been doing this for a year!"

"She finds fake doctors to give her fake diagnoses!"

"I am a board-certified military cardiologist,"

Colonel Carter replied coldly,

taking a step toward Daniel.

"Are you implying that I falsified a federal medical record?"

Daniel opened his mouth,

but no words came out.

He looked around the room,

realizing that his narrative was crumbling in front of the authorities.

Dr. Shah walked into the room at that exact moment,

holding an official packet of certified medical documents.

"Officer,

ma'am,"

Dr. Shah said,

addressing the police and the CPS worker.

"Here are the certified surgical notes,"

"the electrocardiogram printouts,"

"and the surgical telemetry logs from Mrs. Vance’s emergency pacemaker implantation last night."

"Her condition was critical,"

"organic,"

"and verified by our entire cardiology department."

"Furthermore,"

Dr. Shah added,

glancing sharply at Patricia,

"Mrs. Vance is fully lucid,"

"cognitively clear,"

"and entirely capable of caring for her daughter."

The CPS worker reviewed the surgical records,

her expression hardening as she turned to stare at Daniel and Patricia.

"Mr. Vance,"

the CPS worker said sharply.

"You filed a false emergency child endangerment report."

"You claimed your wife was committed to a psychiatric facility."

"I...

I was misinformed,"

Daniel stammered,

sweat breaking out across his forehead.

"My mother told me—"

"Don't you dare blame me!"

Patricia shrieked,

turning on her own son.

"You told me your lawyer had this all handled!"

"Enough!"

the lead police officer commanded,

stepping between Daniel and Patricia.

"Mr. Vance,"

"you and your mother are going to step outside right now."

"If you cause another disturbance in this hospital,"

"I will place you both under arrest for disorderly conduct and filing a false police report."

"You can't do this!"

Daniel shouted as the officers began escorting him toward the door.

"I have rights!"

"I’m her husband!"

"You are a coward,"

Colonel Carter said quietly as Daniel was pushed into the hallway.

"And your control over this family ends today."

Daniel glared at the Colonel with burning hatred,

but he was forcibly led down the corridor,

his mother hurrying behind him,

complaining loudly to anyone who would listen.

The room finally fell silent again.

The CPS worker turned to me,

her face soft with apology.

"Mrs. Vance,"

she said gently.

"I am so sorry for this intrusion."

"I will be filing an immediate report with Judge Hanley’s office,"

"recommending that Mr. Vance’s visitation rights be temporarily suspended pending a full psychological evaluation."

"Thank you,"

I breathed,

closing my eyes as relief washed over me.

Lily wrapped her arms around my neck again.

"See,

Mommy?"

she whispered.

"The bad people are gone."

"Yes,

sweetheart,"

I murmured,

May you like

kissing her cheek.

"They're gone."
