Chapter 19 - The Question on the Cliffside

The summer heat brought clear,

starlit nights and gentle ocean breezes to the coastal town where Aaron had booked a weekend retreat for the three of us.

We stayed in a lovely wooden cottage perched high on a cliff overlooking the roaring Atlantic Ocean.

On Saturday evening,

Sarah had offered to stay at the cottage with Lily so Aaron and I could go for a private sunset walk along the cliffside trail.

The sky was painted in brilliant shades of purple,

gold,

and deep crimson as the sun dipped below the ocean horizon.

The sound of crashing waves echoed from the rocks far below,

creating a magnificent,

timeless symphony.

I walked hand-in-hand with Aaron along the grassy path,

the cool sea breeze blowing through my hair.

"It’s breathtaking,

Aaron,"

I whispered,

stopping at a wooden lookout platform overlooking the endless water.

"I used to think my world was so small,"

I reflected softly,

leaning back against his chest as he wrapped his broad arms gently around my waist.

"When I was trapped in that house with Daniel,"

"I thought the four walls of my bedroom were all I would ever know."

"Now,"

I said,

looking out at the vast ocean,

"the world feels infinite."

Aaron rested his chin gently against the top of my head,

his steady breath warm against my skin.

"Your world was always big,

Clara,"

he said softly.

"They just tried to put a blindfold over your eyes so you wouldn't see your own power."

He slowly turned me around to face him.

The golden light of the fading sun caught the sharp angles of his face,

softening his intense military features into an expression of pure,

vulnerable devotion.

Aaron reached into his jacket pocket,

pulling out a small,

velvet-lined wooden box.

My breath hitched in my throat as my heart gave a joyful,

pristine leap behind my chest.

"Aaron..."

I breathed.

He didn't drop to one knee right away;

instead,

he held the box between us,

looking deeply into my eyes with absolute sincerity.

"Clara,"

Aaron said,

his voice deep,

steady,

and trembling with profound emotion.

"Two years ago,"

"I walked into a courtroom as a soldier doing my duty."

"I didn't know that my life was about to be changed forever by a woman whose strength would humble me every single day."

"I have watched you rebuild your life from the ashes of unimaginable cruelty."

"I have watched you protect your daughter with the fierce grace of an angel."

"And I have fallen so deeply in love with you that I cannot imagine taking another breath without you by my side."

He slowly opened the velvet box,

revealing an exquisite platinum ring set with a brilliant,

ethically sourced diamond that caught the dying light of the sun like a drop of liquid star.

"I don't want to be your savior,

Clara,"

Aaron whispered softly,

dropping down onto one knee before me on the cliffside grass.

"You saved yourself."

"I just want to be your partner,"

"your protector,"

"your husband,"

"and a father to sweet Lily for as long as I live."

"Clara Vance,"

he asked,

looking up at me with tears shining in his dark eyes,

"will you marry me?"

Tears of pure,

overwhelming happiness poured down my cheeks as I looked down at the man who had given me my life,

my freedom,

and my heart.

I didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes!"

I sobbed joyfully,

dropping to my knees right beside him on the soft grass.

"Yes,

Aaron!

A thousand times yes!"

He slipped the platinum ring onto my finger—a perfect fit—and pulled me into a deep,

passionate kiss under the twilight sky.

The ocean roared below us,

the stars began to twinkle overhead,

and the steady,

May you like

unbroken pulse inside my chest sang a song of pure,

unconquerable love.
