Chapter 9 - THE HARVEST OF BITTER SEEDS AND THE CRIMSON TIDE OF THE UNDERWORLD

The weeks turned into a grueling cycle of business and pain.

During the day,

I managed the shifting loyalties of the Chicago underground,

making moves that kept Elias off balance.

At night,

I worked with a specialist Luke had found,

a man who didn't talk to me like a child,

but like a soldier.

The sessions were brutal,

the phantom pain flaring up until I was sweating and cursing,

my muscles screaming in a language only I could understand.

Emma was always there,

waiting in the hallway with a cold towel and a glass of water.

She never offered pity,

only a steady presence that kept me from sinking into the dark.

One night,

after a particularly punishing session,

we sat in the garden,

the air cool and smelling of damp earth.

"Tell me about the day it happened,"

she said softly,

her eyes fixed on the moon.

I hesitated,

the memory of the cold pavement still fresh in my mind.

"It was a rainy afternoon,"

I began,

my voice a low rumble.

"I was leaving a meeting at the Drake.

I thought I was untouchable.

The bullet came from a rooftop three blocks away."

I told her about the sound of the shot,

the way the world had tilted,

and the sudden,

terrifying silence of my legs.

I told her about the months in the hospital,

the betrayal of my own body,

and the realization that I would never walk again.

She listened without interrupting,

her hand resting on the arm of my chair.

"I lost my father when I was ten,"

she said when I finished.

"He was a construction worker.

One day he just... fell.

No warning,

no chance to say goodbye."

We sat in the silence of our shared losses,

two people from vastly different worlds who had both been broken by the suddenness of fate.

"That’s why I work so hard,"

she said,

looking at me.

"Because I know how fast everything can be taken away."

As we sat there,

a red dot appeared on the stone wall of the garden,

dancing just inches from Emma’s head.

My heart stopped.

"Get down!"

I yelled,

lunging forward and throwing my body over hers as a shot rang out,

shattering the stone where the dot had been.

The peace of the night was shattered as the alarms began to blare,

the fortress finally being breached by the wolves at the door.
