Chapter 7 - THE SANCTUARY OF SHADOWS WHERE THE BROKEN MEND THEIR WINGS

The fortress felt different when we returned,
no longer just a tomb of mahogany and stone,
but a bunker under siege.
I had the security team double the patrols,
the infrared cameras scanning every inch of the perimeter for the shadows of Elias’s men.
Emma was sitting in the library,
wrapped in a thick wool blanket,
a cup of tea untouched on the table beside her.
I rolled into the room,
the soft hum of my chair the only sound in the vast space.
"I moved your mother,"
I said,
getting straight to the point.
She looked up,
her eyes red-rimmed but sharp.
"What?
Where?"
"To a private facility in the suburbs,"
I explained,
watching her reaction closely.
"It’s guarded twenty-four hours a day,
and the medical staff is the best money can buy.
Elias won't be able to reach her there."
She let out a long,
shuddering breath,
the tension in her shoulders finally beginning to dissipate.
"Why are you doing this,
Danny?"
she asked,
her voice small.
"You fired me.
You told me I was nothing."
I looked away,
staring at the rows of books that I had read a thousand times but never understood.
"I fired you because I knew Elias was coming,"
I admitted,
the truth feeling like a weight being lifted.
"I thought if you weren't here,
if you weren't associated with me,
you'd be safe.
I was wrong."
She stood up,
the blanket falling to the floor,
and walked toward me until she was standing directly in front of my chair.
"You tried to protect me by breaking me,"
she said,
a flash of her old spirit returning.
"That’s a hell of a way to show you care."
"I don't know how to do things any other way,"
I replied,
looking up at her.
"In my world,
softness is a death sentence."
"Well,
you're not in your world right now,"
she said,
reaching down and taking my hand.
"You're in this house,
and I’m not leaving."
The touch of her hand,
warm and calloused,
sent a jolt through me that I hadn't felt in years.
It wasn't the phantom pain;
it was the feeling of life,
stubborn and unyielding.
"You realize what this means,"
I said,
my voice dropping to a low warning.
"You’re a target now.
As long as you’re with me,
Elias will never stop coming for you."
"Then we’ll just have to make sure he doesn't get the chance,"
she said,
her grip tightening on mine.
I realized then that she wasn't just a maid anymore,
and I wasn't just a broken man in a chair.

We were two people bound by blood and bullets,
trying to find a way to survive in a world that wanted us both dead.
