Chapter 16 - The Iron Cage of Consequence

The blinding,
harsh fluorescent lights of the maximum-security penitentiary buzzed constantly,
emitting a low,
maddening frequency that drilled relentlessly into the minds of the broken,
desperate men trapped inside.
Gero von Stein,
once a wealthy,
arrogant titan of the corporate legal world,
sat huddled quietly on his thin,
uncomfortable mattress,
staring blankly at the cold,
gray steel bars of his tiny,
claustrophobic cell.
His soft,
manicured hands,
which had once worn expensive,
custom-made watches and inflicted terrible,
cowardly violence upon a defenseless,
pregnant woman,
were now covered in painful,
bleeding blisters from his mandatory,
exhausting prison labor.
The brutal,
unforgiving reality of his permanent,
inescapable doom had finally,
completely settled into his shattered,
terrified psyche.
He was no longer a man of immense,
frightening power,
but merely a fragile,
insignificant number in a massive,
uncaring system that despised men who abused women.
Every single day was a grueling,
terrifying battle for basic,
fundamental survival,
as the other hardened,
violent inmates had quickly,
eagerly learned exactly why the former millionaire was locked away with them.
He could not use his charming,
manipulative smile to buy protection,
he could not use his father's vast,
corrupt wealth to bribe the stern,
unforgiving guards,
and he could not escape the haunting,
endless nightmares that plagued his fitful,
sweat-soaked sleep.
During the rare,
short periods of mandatory outdoor exercise in the heavily guarded,
barbed-wire enclosed concrete yard,
Gero kept his head down,
his shoulders hunched in a pathetic,
cowering posture of absolute,
undeniable defeat.
He was entirely,
hopelessly alone,
abandoned by his superficial,
opportunistic friends,
disowned by his disgraced,
imprisoned father,
and universally despised by every single person who had seen the horrific,
damning video of his monstrous crimes.
A massive,
heavily tattooed inmate deliberately,
violently bumped into Gero's frail,
trembling shoulder,
sending the former lawyer crashing heavily,
painfully onto the rough,
freezing concrete of the exercise yard.
Gero did not dare to look up,
he did not dare to utter a single,
solitary word of protest,
knowing perfectly well that any display of anger would immediately,
fatally invite a brutal,
merciless beating that the guards would conveniently,
purposely ignore.
He lay there on the cold,
dirty ground,
tasting the salty,
metallic tang of blood in his mouth,
and suddenly,
vividly remembered the exact,
sickening way he had looked down at Beate when she was curled helplessly,
terrified on their bedroom floor.
The profound,
crushing weight of his own monstrous,
unforgivable cruelty finally pressed down upon his chest,
stealing the breath from his lungs and filling his dark,
empty soul with a suffocating,
endless despair.
He realized,
with a sharp,
agonizing clarity,
that his luxurious,
entitled life was completely,
permanently over,
and that he would draw his final,
lonely breath surrounded by these cold,
unforgiving concrete walls.
There would be no grand,
triumphant redemption for Gero von Stein,
there would be no sympathetic,
forgiving audience to listen to his pathetic,
fabricated excuses,
there would only be the endless,
stretching decades of silence,
pain,
and absolute,
crushing regret.
He slowly,
painfully pushed himself up from the rough,
abrasive ground,
wiping the dirt and blood from his bruised,
swollen cheek with a trembling,
weak hand.
As he limped back toward the heavy,
reinforced steel doors of the cell block,
the heavy,
ironic truth of his miserable,
pathetic existence washed over him like a freezing,
toxic wave.
He was locked inside a cage of his own meticulous,
arrogant design,
and his beloved,
beautiful wife,
the woman he had tried so desperately,
violently to destroy,
May you like
was finally,
truly free.
