Chapter 13 - The First Breath of Freedom

The sharp,

sterile smell of the hospital room was entirely different from the terrifying,

clinical scent of the examination room where my nightmare had finally ended months ago.

This room was bright,

filled with warm,

golden morning sunlight streaming through the large,

panoramic windows that overlooked the beautiful,

rolling hills of the Bavarian countryside.

I lay in the adjustable,

white hospital bed,

exhausted,

sweaty,

and utterly,

completely drained of all my physical strength.

But my heart was full,

overflowing with a massive,

all-consuming wave of pure,

unadulterated joy that I had never thought I would experience in this lifetime.

In my arms,

wrapped in a soft,

blue cotton blanket,

was a tiny,

perfectly formed human being,

sleeping peacefully,

blissfully unaware of the violent,

dark storm he had survived to enter this world.

"He is absolutely,

undeniably perfect,

Beate,"

my father whispered,

standing by the edge of the bed,

his massive,

scarred hands hovering gently,

almost hesitantly over the sleeping infant.

I looked up at Thomas Brand,

the fierce,

lethal warrior who had torn down a corrupt,

powerful empire to save my life,

and saw tears streaming freely,

unashamedly down his weathered,

lined cheeks.

"Do you want to hold him,

Papa?"

I asked softly,

adjusting the small,

striped knit cap on the baby's head.

My father nodded slowly,

reaching down with a gentleness that was completely,

heartbreakingly at odds with the violent,

dangerous life he had lived for the government.

I carefully transferred the small,

fragile bundle into his massive arms,

watching as the old soldier cradled his grandson against his broad,

decorated chest.

The baby stirred slightly,

letting out a soft,

tiny sigh,

before settling deep into the warmth and immense,

unbreakable security of his grandfather's embrace.

"What are you going to name him?"

Thomas asked,

his voice thick with emotion,

his eyes refusing to leave the tiny,

sleeping face of the boy.

I leaned back against the soft,

fluffy pillows,

looking out the window at the bright,

limitless blue sky,

feeling the absolute,

total freedom of my new reality.

"Leo,"

I answered confidently,

the name feeling strong,

powerful,

and deeply right on my tongue.

"Leo Thomas Brand,

because he is going to be brave,

and because he is going to carry the name of the greatest,

most honorable man I have ever known."

My father closed his eyes,

a fresh,

silent wave of tears escaping into the corners of his graying,

distinguished beard,

deeply moved by the profound,

lasting honor.

"Welcome to the world,

little lion,"

Thomas whispered to the baby,

pressing a gentle,

reverent kiss to the infant's warm,

soft forehead.

"I promise you,

on my life and my sacred,

unbreakable honor,

that no one will ever,

ever hurt you or your mother again."

The hospital door opened quietly,

and Dr. Richter,

the same gynecologist who had first discovered my horrifying,

hidden bruises,

walked into the room with a wide,

genuine smile on her face.

"How are my two favorite,

most resilient patients doing this beautiful,

sunny morning?"

she asked,

picking up the medical chart attached to the end of my bed.

"We are perfect,

Doctor,"

I replied,

feeling the truth of those words resonate deep within my healed,

rejuvenated soul.

"His vital signs are incredibly strong,

his weight is absolutely,

perfectly normal,

and despite all the immense,

terrifying stress of your pregnancy,

he is entirely,

miraculously healthy,"

Dr. Richter confirmed,

making a few quick,

efficient notes on the paper.

She looked at me,

her eyes filled with a deep,

professional respect and a warm,

personal admiration.

"You saved him,

Beate,

by having the incredible,

unfathomable courage to walk away from a monster."

I looked at Leo,

safe and secure in my father's strong,

protective arms,

and knew that every single moment of pain,

every second of terror,

had been entirely,

absolutely worth it to see him breathe his first,

free breath.

The shadows of the past were finally,

permanently behind us,

and a new,

beautiful dawn was breaking over our lives,

full of endless,

May you like

boundless possibilities and a pure,

untainted love.
