Chapter 13 - The Handcuffs and the Sisterly Venom

Flashbulbs flashed in violent, rhythmic strobes, blinding the gilded walls of the Grand Ballroom.
Journalists pushed past the velvet security ropes, thrusting long microphone booms and digital cameras toward the stage.
Daniel Sterling was pinned flat against the stage floor, his cheek smearing against the dark crimson carpet.
His bespoke satin bow tie was crooked, his hair was disheveled, and his expensive silver cufflinks clattered against the wood as the marshals tightened the steel cuffs around his wrists.
“Get off me!” Daniel screamed, his voice strained and cracking with humiliating fury.
“Do you know who I am?”
“I am the chief developer of the Hudson River project!”
“Call my attorneys!”
“Call Mayor Vance’s office immediately!”
The lead federal marshal, a burly man with graying temples, did not even blink.
He hauled Daniel to his feet by the chain connecting his handcuffs, forcing him to stand before the crowd of his former peers.
Daniel’s face was bright crimson, veins throbbing at his temples like thick blue cords.
He turned his wild, desperate eyes toward the front row where Emily was still frozen in her chair.
“It was her!” Daniel roared, pointing his shackled hands toward Emily with venomous, frantic terror.
“She gave her the pills!”
“Emily brought the bottles to the house!”
“She told me Olivia was having an ovarian crisis and needed suppressants to prevent tumors!”
“I was just trying to help my wife!”
“Emily is the nurse!”
“She stole the medicine from St. Jude!”
“She orchestrated the whole thing because she wanted Olivia’s trust fund!”
The entire ballroom gasped at the sudden, savage betrayal playing out beneath the crystal chandeliers.
Emily’s head snapped up, her mouth falling open as Daniel’s words tore through her remaining illusions.
For five years, she had believed she was the beloved co-architect of their shared future.
She had believed that Daniel loved her more than life itself, that she was the clever, sensual woman who had rescued him from a frigid, barren wife.
Now, in front of the most powerful people in the state, the man she had sacrificed her soul for was throwing her to the wolves to save his own skin.
A horrifying, animalistic shriek tore from Emily’s throat as she sprang to her feet.
She kicked her high-heeled shoes aside, hiking up the hem of her emerald gown with trembling hands.
She lunged toward the stage stairs, completely ignoring the two state police officers who stepped forward to block her path.
“You lying, cowardly bastard!” Emily shrieked, her voice echoing off the gilded ceiling like shattered glass.
“I stole those drugs for you!”
“You told me you couldn't stand touching her!”
“You told me her father’s trust was the only thing that could save your miserable, bankrupt company!”
Emily broke past the first officer, stumbling onto the lower riser of the stage, her manicured fingers clawing at the air toward Daniel’s face.
Mascara was running down her cheeks in dark, greasy streaks, turning her carefully painted face into a grotesque mask of hysterical madness.
“You begged me to forge Olivia’s medical proxy!” Emily screamed, tears and spittle flying from her lips as the second officer grabbed her by the waist.
“You told me if she had a baby, the prenuptial agreement would make it impossible to get the collateral!”
“You bought the penthouse in Manhattan with the money you siphoned from her joint accounts!”
“You slept with me in that empty penthouse three nights ago and promised me we would be married by Christmas!”
The journalists shouted over one another, typing furiously on their phones as the live stream of the gala spread across Twitter, TikTok, and Bloomberg like wildfire.
The headlines were already writing themselves across national news feeds:
Westchester Real Estate Tycoon Arrested for Poisoning Heiress Wife.
Plaza Hotel Gala Turns into Federal Sting: Daniel Sterling and Mistress Sister-in-Law Detained.
Daniel glared at Emily with pure, murderous hatred in his eyes.
“Shut your mouth, you stupid whore!” Daniel snarled, spitting onto the carpet between them.
“You were just a cheap tool to get into the hospital pharmacy!”
“I never loved you!”
“You are a sick, disgusting sociopath who poisoned your own sister for jewelry and a piece of real estate you could never afford!”
“I hate you!” Emily screamed back, thrashing violently against the officer’s iron grip.
“I hope you rot in hell, Daniel!”
“I kept every single voice recording of our phone calls!”
“I saved every text message where you told me to double the dosage when her tests came back negative!”
“I gave the flash drive to my lawyer yesterday morning!”
“You are going away for life, you monster!”
I stood at the center of the stage, watching the two wolves tear each other to shreds under the blinding halogen lights.
There was no sorrow in my chest, no regret, and not a single shred of pity.
I had predicted this exact moment in Arthur Vance’s private office five days ago.
Monsters who are bound together solely by greed will always devour each other the second the cage door snaps shut.
Arthur Vance walked slowly up the stage stairs, carrying a fresh set of legal documents bound in red ribbon.
He stopped beside me, handing the papers to the federal prosecutor who had accompanied the marshals.
“This is the certified chain-of-custody documentation for the counterfeit capsules recovered from the residence,” Arthur stated with icy professional authority.
“As well as the complete digital audit of the Delaware shell company accounts.”
The lead marshal nodded, turning Daniel around and marching him down the center aisle of the ballroom.
Daniel stumbled in his patent leather shoes, his head hanging low as hundreds of guests raised their smartphones to record his humiliation.
The men who had shaken his hand thirty minutes earlier turned their backs on him with cold revulsion.
The bankers who had promised him fifty million dollars in loans looked down at their plates in absolute silence.
Emily was forced down onto her knees at the base of the stage, her arms pulled behind her back as a female detective clicked a pair of handcuffs around her wrists.
“Emily Vance,” the detective recited, her voice flat and unemotional.
“You are under arrest for first-degree reckless endangerment, felony distribution of controlled substances, healthcare fraud, and identity theft.”
Emily looked up at me from the floor, her eyes wide, wild, and pleading like a drowning animal.
“Livvy... please!” Emily sobbed, her tears soaking into her emerald bodice.
“I'm your little sister!”
“Mom told you to take care of me!”
“Daniel manipulated me, Livvy!”
“He tricked me!”
“Please tell them to let me go!”
I walked slowly to the edge of the stage, looking down at the girl I had sheltered, fed, and loved for twenty-seven years.
I touched my sapphire necklace, the very necklace our mother had worn on the day she passed away.
“Our mother told me to protect you from the evils of the world, Emily,” I said softly, my voice carrying over the subdued whispers of the crowd.
“She never imagined that the evil would be you.”
“You didn't just try to steal my life.”
“You tried to murder my children before they could even draw their first breath.”
“You are no sister of mine.”
“You are nothing.”
The detective pulled Emily to her feet and shoved her toward the service exit behind Daniel.
The heavy brass doors of the Plaza Ballroom closed behind them, shutting out the sirens wailing in the cold Manhattan night.
The room remained frozen in absolute, reverent silence.
I turned back to the microphone, smoothing the front of my velvet gown over my stomach.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” I said with absolute grace and unshakeable composure.
“Thank you for attending the unveiling of The Beacon.”
“The project is officially cancelled, and the Vance Family Trust is withdrawing all collateral.”
May you like
“Have a wonderful evening.”
I stepped down from the podium, took Arthur Vance’s arm, and walked out into the flashing cameras of the lobby with my head held high.
