Chapter 18 - A Midnight Knock In Kennebunkport

The coastal fog in Maine had rolled in thick and suffocating by Thursday night, turning the harbor into a world of ghosts and muffled bells.

Claire sat at her desk, finishing a detailed portfolio allocation for the Hastings endowment.

The Algonquin Club dinner in Boston had been a masterstroke; rather than retreating, her calm, meticulous presentation of the underlying assets had convinced both families to double their initial allocations.

Institutional investors did not flee scandal when they realized the person at the helm had an iron spine and an unassailable balance sheet.

At eleven thirty, the sharp sound of knuckles wrapping against her heavy oak front door broke the quiet.

Claire paused, her pen hovering above the legal pad.

Her cottage sat at the end of a private peninsula; no delivery trucks came this late, and the local sheriff always called before visiting.

She stood up, walked into the hallway, and switched on the exterior floodlights.

Through the security camera monitor mounted beside the door, she saw a woman standing on the cedar porch, drenched in fog and rain.

It was Julianna Ward.

Claire did not unlock the deadbolt immediately.

She picked up the intercom receiver.

"You are trespassing on private property, Julianna."

Julianna looked up directly into the camera lens, her face pale, shivering uncontrollably beneath a soaked trench coat.

"Claire, please," Julianna’s voice came through the speaker, cracked and breathless.

"I drove five hours from Boston."

"I didn't come to threaten you."

"Daniel has completely lost his mind."

Claire stood silent for several seconds, weighing the danger against the absolute certainty of her position.

She turned the brass deadbolt, disengaged the heavy chain, and opened the door six inches, remaining framed in the light.

Julianna stood on the porch mat, looking smaller, broken, and stripped of every shred of the polished corporate veneer she had once worn in Chicago.

"He took Pendelton’s file," Julianna whispered, water dripping from her dark hair onto the threshold.

"He found the offshore corporate registry documents from Geneva."

"He thinks that if he confronts you here, in person, he can force you to sign an indemnity before the federal court unseals the Montgomery trust."

Claire looked at her husband’s former mistress with an unblinking, calm scrutiny.

"And why are you telling me this, Julianna?"

"Because I gave Marcus Vance my full deposition this afternoon," Julianna said, her voice dropping into a desperate sob.

"I gave him every email, every text, every ledger entry Daniel shared with Pendelton."

"I am trying to save myself, Claire."

"And I know that Daniel is already on his way north."
