Chapter 6 - THE AGONY OF A NEW BEGINNING AMIDST THE HOWLING WINDS OF A WINTER WITHOUT MERCY

The pain was not a guest,

it was an executioner,

swinging a heavy,

serrated blade against her spine,

over and over again.

Savannah felt the floorboards,

cold and unforgiving,

pressing against her knees through the thin fabric of her leggings.

The room smelled of old metal,

dust,

and the sharp,

copper scent of her own blood.

"Push,"

Elena whispered,

her voice a lifeline in a sea of agony,

steady and calm.

Roman was out there,

searching the city with a predator’s focus,

but here,

in this dark corner of the world,

only the baby mattered.

Every contraction felt like the walls were closing in,

crushing the air from her lungs.

She gripped the edge of the wooden table,

her knuckles white,

her fingers digging into the rot of the timber.

She remembered Roman’s hands,

how they used to hold her with such possessiveness,

as if she were a piece of art he had purchased at a high price.

He didn't want a child,

she realized now,

he wanted an heir to his darkness.

The scream she had been holding back finally tore from her throat,

muffled by the sound of the wind rattling the windows.

"I can't,"

she gasped,

her vision blurring with tears of exhaustion.

"You have to,"

Julian said from the corner,

his eyes fixed on the laptop screen,

monitoring the heat signatures of the street.

"He's close,

Savannah,"

"we don't have much time."

The fear of being caught,

of being dragged back to that marble prison,

gave her a final,

violent surge of energy.

She pushed with everything she had,

feeling her body tear,

feeling her soul scream.

And then,

the world went silent.

The heavy,

rhythmic pounding of her heart was replaced by a thin,

fragile wail.

It was the sound of a new life,

untouched by the sins of the father.

Elena caught the small,

slippery body,

wrapping her quickly in a clean,

warm blanket.

"It's a girl,"

the midwife breathed,

tears in her own eyes.

Savannah reached out,

her arms trembling,

and took the bundle into her chest.

The baby was small,

perfect,

and already looking for her mother.

"Maya,"

Savannah whispered,

the name a promise of a future without Roman Carter.

But the peace lasted only a second.

A loud thud echoed from the hallway outside.

Julian stood up,

reaching for the heavy iron pipe he had kept near the door.

May you like

"They're in the building,"

he hissed.
